A higher value makes that movement more noticeable and gives the scene a stronger sense of depth; a lower value makes the background appear more stationary. It changes presentation, not the biome or world itself.
How the Parallax setting works
Terraria displays biome backgrounds behind blocks and other objects. Parallax controls their relative scrolling as the player moves: at low values, the scenery appears to move along with the foreground; at high values, its movement relative to the player is more apparent. The setting is documented on desktop, console, and mobile, though the controls and menus can differ by platform. The Terraria Wiki’s Settings reference describes this relationship.

The slider is documented as ranging from 0 to 100, inclusive. The dedicated Parallax reference describes 0 as making the background stationary relative to the player, like foreground objects, and 100 as making it scroll at a relatively high speed. The references do not specify a precise motion ratio for each intermediate value, so the slider should not be read as a documented linear scale.
What different values look like
| Setting | Documented effect |
|---|---|
| Lower value | Backgrounds appear more stationary relative to the player, so the depth effect is subtler. |
| 0 | The dedicated Parallax reference says the background moves with the player like foreground objects. |
| Higher value | Backgrounds move more in relation to the player, making the depth effect more noticeable. |
| 100 | The dedicated Parallax reference describes background scrolling at a relatively high speed. |
These descriptions explain the direction of the effect, not exact movement at every slider position. Try a small adjustment while moving through an area to find the amount of background motion you prefer.

Parallax is not the Backgrounds toggle
Parallax changes how visible backgrounds scroll; the separate Backgrounds setting determines whether certain backgrounds appear at all. The Settings reference says disabling Backgrounds hides surface and Underworld backgrounds, although surface ambient entities may remain visible. The Terraria Wiki’s Backgrounds reference covers the visibility setting. Turning down Parallax is therefore not the same as hiding backgrounds.
What is the default Parallax value?
The Terraria Wiki’s references conflict: its general Settings page lists 60 as the desktop default, while its dedicated Parallax page calls 0 the default. Since these statements do not establish one universal default across platforms, check the value shown in your own game rather than assuming it starts at a particular number. The Settings reference describes a 0–100 desktop control and a 0%–100% advanced control in its mobile and console settings information.
