In Chinese, “Raiden” is commonly written 雷電 in Traditional Chinese or 雷电 in Simplified Chinese. The compound means “thunder and lightning.” In Mandarin it is pronounced léidiàn; “Raiden” is the Japanese reading of the Traditional characters, not the Mandarin pronunciation.
How do you write Raiden in Chinese?
| Form | Writing | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional Chinese | 雷電 | Mandarin: léidiàn |
| Simplified Chinese | 雷电 | Mandarin: léidiàn |
| Japanese | 雷電 | raiden (らいでん) |
The Chinese character forms and Mandarin pinyin are listed in the fan-maintained Mortal Kombat Wiki entry for Raiden; treat that as a useful but non-primary reference. The Japanese reading and the “thunder and lightning” definition are given by Jepang.org’s 雷電 entry.
What does 雷電 mean?
The compound literally refers to thunder and lightning. The characters carry related but distinct meanings: 雷 means thunder, while 電 refers to electricity and, in this compound, lightning. The Japanese vocabulary reference defines 雷電 as “thunder and lightning”; the Chinese character glosses and pinyin above come from the fan-maintained reference.
Is Raiden Chinese or Japanese?
It depends on whether you mean the written characters or the spoken name. 雷電 is a shared character form used in Japanese and Traditional Chinese, but the languages pronounce it differently: Mandarin says léidiàn, while Japanese reads it raiden. Sharing characters does not make the Japanese reading a Mandarin pronunciation.

What if you mean a video-game character?
Raiden is a character name in more than one game franchise, so the word’s literal meaning does not by itself identify a character’s fictional history or cultural inspiration. The official Mortal Kombat roster lists Raiden as a Mortal Kombat character. Konami’s Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance character page labels its Raiden with the characters 雷電. These pages establish franchise usage, not a shared identity or origin across the characters.
