After you verify your age, Roblox assigns your account to an age group and uses that group to determine which games and communication features you may be eligible to use. Verification does not automatically enable every feature: settings, parental consent, regional availability, and support in a specific experience can still limit access.
What Roblox does with your age check
Roblox says an age check is required for some age-based features, including communication, Restricted Content, chatting without filters with trusted friends, and collaboration through TeamCreate in Studio. Completing the check places your account in an age group that helps determine eligibility; it is not a universal unlock.
Roblox’s age-group labels can differ by feature or surface. Its overview lists groups such as under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, and 18+, while its facial-estimation guidance describes estimated ranges including 5–8 and 18–20. The relevant age band depends on the feature being considered, so do not assume every Roblox screen uses identical labels. See Roblox’s age-check overview and its age-estimation explanation.
What may become available
Games and content
Your group affects the games and content Roblox makes available. Its overview describes a limited Kids catalog for users under 9, age-appropriate games for users aged 9–12, broader access for older groups, and exclusion of games rated 18+ for users aged 16–17. Actual access may still depend on settings, region, and Roblox’s rollout of game access; the overview describes a transition period in most regions.

Text chat
An age check is required before chat settings can allow communication. Roblox says users can chat with people in similar age groups and with trusted friends, subject to settings and age-based consent requirements. Experience chat takes place inside an experience and ends when you leave; it is filtered. Users aged 5–9 need parental consent for Experience chat, while users under 16 need parental consent for Direct chat. Regional restrictions also apply. Check Roblox’s age-check guidance and its chat feature information for the current rules.
Trusted-friend status can allow communication across age groups, but it does not mean every chat feature is automatically enabled or available. Review Communication settings and any parental controls on the account.

Voice chat
Voice is opt-in, not switched on simply because you completed an age check. Roblox says eligible users aged 13 and older can enable it in supported regions and experiences. Under Roblox’s updated process, verifying a phone number is not a substitute for an age check. If voice controls do not appear after your check, the region or experience may not support voice. Details are in Roblox’s age-check overview and its communication guidance.
Which verification method you used matters
Roblox describes two methods: facial age estimation and, for users at least 13, government-ID verification. In Account Info, the facial option is labeled “Continue with selfie” and the ID option “Continue with ID.” Roblox identifies Persona as its current third-party partner for facial age estimation.

| Method | Who can use it | What it does to the account | Roblox’s stated handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Facial age estimation | Users offered the option in Roblox; no minimum age is stated in the cited overview | Uses a selfie-style image or video to estimate an age group; it does not, by itself, have the birthday-correction effect described for ID checks | Roblox says images and video are deleted after processing and it does not receive or store biometric data |
| Government-ID verification | Users aged 13 and older | After successful verification, Roblox says it changes the account birthday to the date on the ID | Requires a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, passport, or residency card |
For ID verification, Roblox says Account Info should show “Verified” beneath the birthday and that verification status can be undone only once per account. See the age-check overview and Roblox’s ID verification instructions.
The privacy statements above are Roblox’s descriptions of its process, not an independent audit of its service provider. For facial estimation, Roblox says: “No. Roblox does not receive or store any biometric data from the facial age estimation process.” — Roblox Support, “How does Roblox estimate my age?”

What to do if Roblox estimates the wrong age
Roblox describes different correction routes depending on the account’s age and situation:
- If you are over 13 and the facial estimate is wrong: Roblox directs you to verify your birthday with an ID.
- If the account is under 13: Roblox’s guidance describes changing the birthday in settings.
- If you are under 18 and a parent account is linked: a linked parent can update the birthday after facial estimation, subject to a one-time limitation on parental changes.
If an account self-reported as over 13 is estimated as under 13, Roblox says there is a 48-hour grace period before the age group is officially updated, unless the user accepts the result sooner. Roblox may also prompt another age check if it detects a discrepancy. The correction options are described in Roblox’s age-check overview.

Account details and parental controls to check
One specific consequence applies if facial estimation places a user in the 5–8 or 9–12 group: Roblox says certain personal data, including email and phone number, will be removed from Roblox. This statement concerns those estimated groups; it should not be generalized to every age-check method or account.
Parents can use linked parent accounts to manage communication, content, screen time, spending, and other settings. Roblox says parental management changes as children get older, and access to settings and permissions varies by age. Regional defaults and feature availability can differ as well. After a check, review Account Info, Communication settings, and Parental Controls rather than assuming a feature has been enabled. See Roblox’s chat information and its parent guidance.
