Resting at a bench saves and makes it your respawn point; progression events can also trigger automatic saves. Use the in-game menu option and wait for it to finish before closing the game.
Does Hollow Knight save when you quit?
The Hollow Knight Wiki’s save-point reference lists Quit to Menu as a repeatable save trigger. Select that option and allow the game to return to the menu before closing it. The sources cited here do not establish what happens to unsaved progress after a crash, forced close, or power interruption, so do not treat those as equivalent to quitting through the menu.
Do you have to sit on a bench before quitting?
No. The save-data overview describes automatic saves triggered by progression events, and the save-point reference catalogs examples. A bench is still the clearest way to establish a known respawn point: the bench reference says resting saves and makes that bench the respawn location after quitting or dying. Resting also restores health.
Where will you return when you load the game?
The save-data overview says a loaded profile returns the Knight to the last save point. That means a save does not preserve your exact position in a room or along a route. If you rested at a bench, expect to return to that bench; otherwise, you return to the last save point recorded by the game.

Does quitting save your place in a Pantheon?
No: do not expect to resume midway through a Pantheon boss sequence. The save-point reference describes a Pantheon exception: resting inside a Pantheon does not preserve the Knight’s place in the sequence, and the Knight respawns outside upon dying. Its table also lists quitting to the menu inside a Pantheon as a save trigger associated with the bench above the first three Pantheons; this does not mean the boss sequence itself is saved.
