After helping his family escape a government assault on his ranch, he stays behind and is killed. The epilogue then follows his son Jack, who later tracks down and kills the retired agent Edgar Ross.
Why John is forced to hunt his former gang
John is trying to leave his life as an outlaw behind when federal agents take his wife and son hostage. They threaten his family to make him pursue his former gang and bring its members to justice. Rockstar’s official product page describes that coercion as the premise of the 2010 game; the Red Dead Redemption Essentials Manual likewise says John had resolved to put his past behind him and settle down with his young family.

How John dies
Once the agents release his family, John returns to the ranch and tries to resume an honest life. Edgar Ross instead leads an armed force against the ranch. John helps Abigail and Jack get away, then remains to face the attackers. He is killed in the assault, and Uncle also dies; Abigail and Jack survive. The ending is recounted in the game’s plot summary.
What happens after John’s death?
The story continues in an epilogue centered on Jack. After Abigail later dies, Jack pursues Ross, who has retired, and kills him in a duel. John’s death is therefore not the end of the game’s story, but the focus shifts from John’s attempt to protect his family to Jack’s revenge.
#1 Best Overall
- When federal agents threaten his family, former outlaw John Marston is forced to hunt down the gang of criminals he once called friends.
- Experience Marston’s journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico as he fights to bury his blood-stained past in the critically acclaimed predecessor to the 2018 blockbuster, Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Also included is Undead Nightmare, the iconic horror story that transforms the world of Red Dead Redemption into an apocalyptic fight for survival against a zombie horde.
Which Red Dead Redemption is this?
This answer concerns the original Red Dead Redemption, released in 2010. It is not the ending of Red Dead Redemption 2, the 2018 prequel. Rockstar’s product page identifies the original as the predecessor to the prequel. John’s fate in the original is fixed: he dies, and the epilogue follows Jack.

Rockstar Support says that being unable to change outfits during a portion near the end of the single-player story is by design and advises continuing the story missions. That note concerns a gameplay restriction; it does not itself explain the ending. See Rockstar Support’s outfit guidance, updated December 1, 2025.
