The exact line and who says it
The line is spoken by Genji, the Overwatch and Heroes of the Storm cyborg ninja. Blizzard’s “Genji Enters the Nexus!” feature quotes it with the attribution “Genji, Cybernetic Ninja” (Blizzard Entertainment, “Genji Enters the Nexus!”). Keep the romanization as Blizzard prints it, including the macron in “Ryūjin.”
What the line means
A secondary reference, the Overwatch Wiki’s page of Genji’s Overwatch 1 quotes, files the line under Dragonblade and renders it in English as “Taste the blade of Ryūjin!” (Overwatch Wiki, “Genji/Quotes/Overwatch 1”). That is a fan-maintained translation, not an official English subtitle. Blizzard’s page does not supply a translation, so if you quote the English wording, attribute it to the wiki and describe it as a secondary rendering.
The phrase is Japanese-styled and references Ryūjin, the dragon-god of the sea in Japanese myth, with “ken” meaning blade or sword. Those component readings are general Japanese vocabulary rather than a sourced explanation from Blizzard, so treat them as background rather than as the official meaning.

Where the line is tied to Genji’s kit
The wiki groups the line with Genji’s Dragonblade quotes, which is where it fits in the character’s ultimate-ability voice lines. The sources reviewed do not establish whether the line plays identically across every current Overwatch client, patch, or localization, so check the in-game voice set on your own client if you need to confirm playback for a specific version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is and is not established
- Established: the quoted wording and the speaker attribution to Genji, from Blizzard’s official feature.
- Established as secondary only: the English gloss “Taste the blade of Ryūjin!”
- Not established: an official English translation, behavior across all client versions, and any expert or developer explanation of the line’s meaning.
No purchase is needed to identify the line. Watching Genji’s ultimate in a match or on Blizzard’s feature page is enough to confirm the wording.
