SSL in Rocket League stands for Supersonic Legend, the highest named competitive rank in the game. Players use the abbreviation as shorthand for the full rank name, so “SSL” and “Supersonic Legend” refer to the same tier.
What SSL stands for
SSL is short for Supersonic Legend. In Rocket League’s official competitive rank order, Supersonic Legend is the top named rank, placed after Grand Champion III. Spell out the full name the first time you use it in any guide or conversation, then “SSL” is a fair shorthand because the community uses it constantly.
Where SSL sits on the rank ladder
Epic Games lists the competitive tiers in this order, from lowest to highest:
- Unranked
- Bronze
- Silver
- Gold
- Platinum
- Diamond
- Champion
- Grand Champion
- Supersonic Legend (SSL)
Ranks below SSL carry numbered divisions, I through IV in the official listing. SSL does not. The official list presents it as a single rank with no numbered tier or division, which is why you will see “SSL” written without a Roman numeral. Grand Champion III is the rank directly beneath it.

How rank changes work
Your competitive rank moves with your results. Wins promote you toward higher divisions and ranks, and losing more matches than you win demotes you. Epic Games also says the difficulty of your matches matters, so two players with identical win-loss records may not progress at the same speed.
That means there is no published win count that guarantees a rank-up, and no universal rating value that counts as “SSL” in every case. Epic’s support documentation puts it this way: “There is no fixed number of games that you need to rank up.” The quote is attributed to Rocket League Support / Epic Games.
Playing in a party
Matchmaking aims to pair players of similar skill. When you queue in a party, Rocket League uses a weighted average of the party members’ skill ratings. From Champion and above, that average is weighted more heavily toward the highest-ranked player in the group. A duo or trio can therefore be matched differently, and its rating can move differently, than the same players would in solo queue.
SSL and seasonal rewards
Reaching the rank and earning season rewards are separate goals. Epic’s seasonal rewards support article says a player needs 10 additional wins at Supersonic Legend to earn the SSL reward level. Those wins are on top of reaching the rank, so an SSL player who has not yet logged those wins will not have the reward level.

Reward items and season titles change from one season to the next. Do not assume that an SSL-related title or item from one season will return in another.
A dated example: Season 21
The Season 21 patch notes, dated December 10, 2025, announced Ranked Heatseeker in 2v2 and Heatseeker Supersonic Legend titles among that season’s rewards. The same notes said Snow Day replaced Dropshot in the ranked lineup for Season 21, while Dropshot moved into casual rotation. These are historical details from that season. They do not describe the current playlist lineup or the current reward list, so check the latest patch notes for what is active now.

Common mix-ups to avoid
- Rank versus account level: SSL is a competitive rank. It is not an account level or a player title.
- Rank versus reward item: A Supersonic Legend title or reward is a cosmetic season item, which is separate from the rank itself.
- Rank versus fixed thresholds: Rank-ups depend on results and match difficulty, so no single win count or rating number guarantees SSL.
Rank is tied to competitive playlist play. If you are looking up which playlists are active or what rewards are available this season, use the current in-game menus or Epic’s latest official notes rather than older guides.
