For the Genocide-route fight against Sans in Undertale, equip Cloudy Glasses as armor and Torn Notebook as your weapon. Their special effects described for this battle—not their ordinary defense or attack ratings—are the reason to use them. Choose the Burnt Pan instead of the Notebook if you would rather improve healing-item recovery.
Why ordinary AT and DF matter less against Sans
Sans is listed as having 1 HP and 1 DF, and he is scripted to die in one hit. He also dodges attacks for 22 turns, so the opening stretch is about surviving his attacks rather than improving your damage output. His fight-specific equipment effects make the listed AT and DF numbers a poor guide to the best loadout.

Best weapon: Torn Notebook
Torn Notebook provides +2 AT and +0.5 second of INV in the listing. Against Sans, its described effect ignores one frame of damage every five frames and slows KARMA drain. That defensive effect is the reason to equip it here, despite being a weapon-slot item. Torn Notebook item details.
When to choose the Burnt Pan instead
The Burnt Pan boosts healing items, making it an alternative if you want more recovery from healing. The tradeoff is that you give up the Torn Notebook’s documented Sans-specific damage-ignore and KARMA-drain effects. Stained Apron and Temmie Armor are described as unavailable on the Genocide route. How to advance the fight
- Equip Cloudy Glasses and Torn Notebook before the battle if you want the survival-focused setup.
