For most Draenei players in The Burning Crusade, Shaman is the strongest default. It is the Alliance class that only Draenei can play in the referenced TBC class overview, and the Draenei version of Shaman gives nearby party members a spell-hit bonus. There is no universal best class, though. Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, and Warrior each suit a different role, so the right choice depends on what you want to do in the game and which version of TBC you are playing.
Confirm which TBC ruleset you are playing
The answer depends on the ruleset. A Wowhead overview of TBC talents, classes, and races, updated 2026-01-08, separates the original Burning Crusade rules from TBC Classic Anniversary Edition. The Anniversary version adds dual specialization and makes Bloodlust raid-wide rather than party-wide. Blizzard’s WoW Classic Primer for New Players is a useful general introduction, but it covers the original Classic races and classes, not Draenei or TBC. Its faction-by-class information should not be read as a TBC restriction on Alliance Shaman. For Draenei in TBC, use the race and class guides linked in this article.
The six Draenei class options
Draenei can play six TBC classes: Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Shaman, and Warrior. Each Draenei class also carries one of two racial presence abilities that affect party members within 30 yards. The table below lists the values from the Wowhead Alliance races guide, updated 2026-01-03, Classic Burning Crusade Alliance Races and Racial Abilities — Wowhead.

What the hit bonuses do
Heroic Presence adds 1% hit to physical attacks, and Inspiring Presence adds 1% spell hit to spells. Hit reduces the chance that an attack or spell misses, so the bonus matters most to a group whose members are attacking or casting the same targets. Only the matching type applies: a physical-hit bonus does nothing for spells, and a spell-hit bonus does nothing for melee or ranged attacks.
The racial guide describes both presences as useful to parties. That usefulness is real, but it is a group benefit, not an individual performance boost. A Shaman’s Inspiring Presence helps your allies whether or not you pick Shaman for your own damage or healing.

Draenei have two other racial abilities worth knowing. Gift of the Naaru is a heal-over-time effect lasting 15 seconds, and Gemcutting raises Jewelcrafting skill by 5. The guide does not present either as a deciding factor when comparing classes.
Class-by-class fit
Shaman: the default for Alliance Draenei
Choose Shaman if you want the Alliance class that Draenei alone can play in TBC and you want to strengthen your group with Inspiring Presence. The Shaman entry is the best starting point for players who have no strong preference for role, but the cited overview does not break down Shaman’s roles in detail, so check the linked class overview before you commit to a specialization.

Hunter: physical damage with Heroic Presence
Hunter is the choice for players who want a physical damage dealer. A Draenei Hunter adds the physical-hit bonus to the party, which is useful in groups that rely on melee or ranged physical attacks. Hunter is one of six reasonable options, not a verified top performer.
Mage: spellcasting with Inspiring Presence
Mage suits players who want a spellcasting damage role. A Draenei Mage adds spell hit to the party, which fits groups built around casters and spell-based damage.

Paladin: a hybrid with tank or healing roles
Paladin is the most flexible choice if you want to switch between tanking and healing. Draenei Paladins receive Heroic Presence. Because the Paladin can take on either a tank or a healer role in TBC, it works well for players who want to fill a gap in the group.
Priest: healing with spell-hit support
Priest is the choice for a healer who also gives the group spell-hit support. A Draenei Priest can heal in TBC and carries Inspiring Presence.

Warrior: melee with a tank option
Warrior suits players who want a melee class. A Draenei Warrior receives Heroic Presence, and TBC includes a Protection specialization for players who want to tank.

Work through these questions in order. The first answer usually narrows the list to two or three classes.
- What role do you want? Choose Hunter or Warrior for physical damage or melee, Mage for spellcasting, Paladin for tanking or healing, Priest for healing, and Shaman for the Alliance-only option with Inspiring Presence.
- Will you mostly play solo or in groups? The presence bonuses only help your party. If you solo most of the time, the bonus matters less and the class’s own playstyle should carry more weight.
- Do you focus on PvE or PvP? Group composition and role demands differ between dungeons, raids, and battlegrounds. Check the class guide for the content you play most.
- Do you want to play with physical-hit or spell-hit support? If your group mostly uses melee or ranged physical attacks, Heroic Presence matters more. If your group relies on spells, Inspiring Presence is the bonus to look for.
Once you have answered these questions, confirm the ruleset described in the first section. A class that fits your role on the original TBC ruleset may need different talent choices on Anniversary, where dual specialization is available.
Check the Wowhead class and talent overview for the current class details, and use the Alliance races guide for the exact racial ability wording.
