There is no single best sniper rifle in Borderlands 3. The choice depends on your Vault Hunter, your build, and the kind of enemies you fight most. For flexible damage, the Sand Hawk is the strongest general pick when its firing modes suit your build. The Complex Root is the better choice for elemental splash damage, and the Skullmasher suits players who want several projectiles per shot and critical-hit effects. These are role-based recommendations drawn from documented weapon traits. No controlled head-to-head test has established which rifle deals the most damage.
How sniper rifles work in Borderlands 3
Sniper rifles generally trade magazine size and firing speed for high damage per shot. Icy Veins’ sniper overview, last updated in 2019, describes this trade-off, and it also warns that the same design makes snipers less convenient against crowds or enemies that rush into close range. Because that guide predates much of the current game, use it only for the general class trade-offs, not for specific weapon values.

How to choose the right sniper for your build
- Your build’s damage type. If your build relies on elemental damage, the Complex Root’s splash behavior is the most relevant. If it relies on raw per-hit damage and critical hits, the Skullmasher and Sand Hawk are better fits.
- Projectile behavior. The Sand Hawk and Skullmasher both fire multiple projectiles. The Complex Root’s extra projectiles follow the shot path and deal splash damage.
- Close-range comfort. A community guide on the official Gearbox forums notes that the Sand Hawk can be used at close range despite its sniper classification, which matters if you do not stay at a distance.
- What you own. The Sand Hawk is base-game content. The Complex Root and Skullmasher require DLC, so the base game alone does not give you access to them.
Sand Hawk: the flexible damage pick
The Sand Hawk is the most versatile option in this group. It fires seven slow, bird-shaped orbs per shot, comes in elemental variants, and supports selectable firing modes. Its firing modes are the main reason it fits some builds and not others, so check whether the mode combinations you can get match the way you plan to fight.
It is classified as a sniper, but it is not a traditional precision rifle. Its slow orbs and multi-projectile pattern make it better suited to damage output than to long-range, single-target precision shots. Lootlemon’s item page for the Sand Hawk, last updated in 2024, lists its dedicated source as Katagawa Jr. and states that the listed sources require Mayhem 6 or higher.

Complex Root: elemental splash damage
The Complex Root is the splash-focused option. Each shot produces extra projectiles that deal elemental splash damage. It requires the Bounty of Blood DLC. Lootlemon’s item page, last updated in 2024, lists Lani Dixon as its dedicated source. This rifle is the clearest choice when your build benefits from area damage rather than single-target precision.
Skullmasher: multi-projectile critical-hit play
The Skullmasher is the Jakobs option built around multiple projectiles. It fires five projectiles per shot, and its critical hits ricochet one bullet. It requires the Guns, Love, and Tentacles DLC. Lootlemon’s item page for the Skullmasher, last updated earlier in 2024, lists Eista as its dedicated source. Because its critical-hit ricochet depends on landing crits, its strength is strongest in builds that already prioritize critical damage.

Monocle: traditional scoped critical-hit play
The Monocle is the option for players who prefer a classic scoped rifle with a critical-hit focus. A community guide describes its high zoom and a large scoped critical-hit bonus. The same guide names Demoskaggon as its source. Drop details can change between patches, so check the current source before planning a farm around it.

- The Gearbox forum guides are written by community members. They are not official developer balance rankings.
- Lootlemon’s item pages give detailed weapon traits and farming sources, but they were last updated in 2024. Game patches since then may have changed values or drop conditions.
- No controlled damage comparison across Vault Hunters, Mayhem levels, gear rolls, or game versions is available. The recommendations above reflect documented traits, not measured performance.
If you want the single highest-damage rifle for your exact build, test the candidates in your own Mayhem setting and compare the damage numbers the game displays.
