What the sexual content involves
Character customization
The ESRB’s rating summary says players can customize V with depictions of breasts, buttocks, and genitalia. This is the most explicit element in the game’s sexual material, and it is a matter of the player’s own character design rather than a story scene.

Optional sexual encounters
The ESRB also says players can encounter optional events involving sexual activity with other main characters or with prostitutes. These encounters are shown in the first person. They include partially nude characters, suggestive movement, brief thrusting motions, and one scene in which a character moves toward a partner’s crotch. The ESRB describes these scenes as brief. It does not state that every encounter is explicit or that any of them is mandatory to progress through the game.
Violence, gore, drugs, and language
The sexual material is only part of the picture. The ESRB lists the following as the game’s other mature content:
#1 Best Overall
- Explore all of Night City’s extremes — From V’s rise as a cyberpunk mercenary in Night City to their journey into the shadowy world of spies in Dogtown, dive into the full story and carve your own path through it.
- Meet unforgettable characters — Forge relationships with a rich cast of characters all with their own dreams, tragedies, and tales to tell, including Keanu Reeves as rockerboy Johnny Silverhand and Idris Elba as secret agent Solomon Reed.
- Explore one of the most immersive cities in video games — Experience a breathtaking city of the dark future at home or on the go with the power of Nintendo Switch 2! Customize your journey from the very first steps with performance and quality mode.
- Combat: gun battles and melee attacks, with some dismemberment, frequent blood effects, and locations containing mutilated corpses.
- A torture scene: one quest has the player help hammer nails through a character’s hands and feet. The ESRB notes accompanying screams and blood effects.
- Drugs and alcohol: frequent fictional drug references, including a state-altering inhaler or stimulant and a billboard showing someone snorting speed. The ESRB also describes repeated drinking that distorts the screen and the ability to drive while drunk.
- Language: strong profanity throughout.
Steam’s developer-provided description independently names strong language, intense violence, blood and gore, nudity, and sexual material, so the content categories are consistent across the ESRB and the developer’s own store text.
Ratings by region
Ratings are assigned by national or regional bodies, and they do not convert neatly from one system to another. The table below compares the two official classifications available for the game.
Rank #2
- Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City
- Become a cyberpunk, an urban mercenary equipped with cybernetic enhancements and build your legend on the streets of Night City
- Take the riskiest job of your life and go after a prototype implant that is the key to immortality
| Rating authority | Rating | Listed content | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESRB (United States) | M, Mature 17+ | Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol | From the ESRB’s Cyberpunk 2077 rating entry. |
| Australian Classification Board | R 18+ (original multiplatform version) | Consumer advice: high impact themes, sex, violence and references to sexual violence | Classified 11 March 2020. The record’s wording on sexual violence is brief and should not be read as describing a specific scene. |
| Other countries | Not stated in the sources reviewed for this article | Not stated | Check the rating shown on the store page for your country. |
CD PROJEKT RED’s user agreement says ratings can differ by region and that the applicable rating appears before purchase. It also advises players who are sensitive to violence, sexuality, or drug use to read the rating descriptors rather than rely on the age number alone.
How to check the rating for your copy
- Identify the country where the game will be played and the storefront you are buying from. The rating is tied to the region.
- Look at the rating shown on the product page before you buy. CD PROJEKT RED states that the relevant rating appears there.
- Confirm the edition. The ESRB entry covers the game itself; the expansion Phantom Liberty is a separate purchase, and its content should be checked against the same descriptors.
- Compare the descriptor list, not only the age number. An M rating in one country and an R 18+ rating in another can describe the same content in different terms.
Platform notes
PlayStation’s US store page lists the game for PS4 and PS5 and repeats the ESRB descriptors. The same page states that the PS4 base game received its last patch on November 8, 2022, and is no longer supported for later patches. Access to later patches and to Phantom Liberty requires a PS5. This is a note about patch support and expansion access, not about the content descriptors. Store listings change, so confirm the current platform details on the storefront before buying.

- THE ULTIMATE CYBERPUNK 2077 EXPERIENCE - Includes the critically acclaimed spy thriller expansion Phantom Liberty
- CREATE YOUR OWN CYBERPUNK
- Explore the city of the future – you decide when you want to go where and how to get there
- Decide how the story ends – your choices in the main game as well as in the spy thriller adventure Phantom Liberty lead to a complex web of consequences
For a parent or a player deciding whether the game suits them, the practical answer is this: the ESRB’s M rating reflects the nudity, optional sexual encounters, and heavy violence described above, and the Australian R 18+ rating reflects the same category of content for the original version. Read the descriptors for the edition in front of you before you start.
