What Is the Fastest Way to Increase CP in Pokémon GO?

Power Up is the most direct way to raise an owned Pokémon's CP in Pokémon GO. Here's how it compares with evolution and Trainer progression, and why no single method is fastest for everyone.

For a Pokémon you already own, the most direct way to raise its CP is to Power Up it, spending Stardust and the Candy from that Pokémon’s evolutionary family. Evolution can also raise CP when the species is eligible and you have the Candy and any extra requirements. Official Pokémon GO material does not establish one “fastest” method for every player, because the real speed depends on the species, your Stardust and Candy stock, and your Trainer level. If you meant catching Pokémon that start with higher CP, that is a separate mechanic. It depends on your Trainer level and does nothing to Pokémon you already have.

Two different meanings of “increase CP”

Players use the phrase for two different goals. The first is raising the CP of a Pokémon already in your Pokémon Storage or on your team. The second is finding a stronger Pokémon to catch in the first place. Official support treats these as separate mechanics, and the methods that work for one do not work for the other. Power Up and evolution change an owned Pokémon. Trainer progression changes the pool of Pokémon you will encounter.

Route 1: Power Up an owned Pokémon

Powering up is the only route that reliably raises CP on demand. The Pokémon GO Help Center states: “Powering up Pokémon you’ve caught increases their CP and HP.” Each Power Up adds CP and HP and costs Stardust and Candy.

  1. Open the Pokémon you want to strengthen and select the Power Up button.
  2. Read the preview. It shows the CP and HP the Pokémon will gain, plus the exact Stardust and Candy the upgrade costs.
  3. Confirm that the Candy shown is the Candy for that Pokémon’s evolutionary family. Candy from another family cannot be used.
  4. If the preview asks for Candy XL, check whether your Trainer level allows you to hold and spend it yet (see below).
  5. Confirm the upgrade. Repeat only while the preview still shows a worthwhile CP gain for the resources you are willing to spend.

The cost shown on the button is the figure to trust. The Help Center notes that costs can rise as a Pokémon gets stronger, so the Stardust and Candy needed for the next step may be higher than the step before.

  • Spin PokéStops or throw Poké Balls automatically in Pokémon GO for hands-free gameplay (and Great Balls and Ultra Balls can be thrown too!)

Stardust is shared; Candy is family-specific

Stardust is one pool used for every Pokémon. Catching, hatching, completing research and battling can all earn it. Candy is different. Catching, hatching and transferring a Pokémon earns Candy only for that Pokémon’s family. This is why a Pokémon with a large family stock may power up quickly, while a rare species with little Candy may stall even with plenty of Stardust.

Candy XL is a later requirement

Candy XL is also family-specific. It is needed for power-ups to higher CP levels, and it can first be collected at Trainer level 31. The official sources list catching, transferring, hatching, evolving, trading, gym feeding and buddy walking as ways to obtain it. If you have never seen Candy XL in a Pokémon’s preview, it is not yet required for that Pokémon.

Route 2: Evolution

Evolving a Pokémon is another direct route to higher CP and HP. Evolved forms generally have higher CP and HP than their pre-evolution, but the cost and conditions differ by species. Check the Pokémon’s evolution screen before committing Candy, because the requirement is not the same for every family.

  • Candy amount: the evolution cost is set per species and is shown on the evolution screen.
  • Item or task: some species need a specific item or an in-game task before they can evolve.
  • Trade: some evolutions require trading the Pokémon to another Trainer.
  • Lure or buddy walking: some evolutions depend on a lure or on buddy-walking conditions.

Evolution is often the bigger CP jump, but it is a one-time change to a species line and cannot be repeated like a Power Up. Compare it with the Power Up preview before deciding which route uses your scarce Candy better.

Route 3: Trainer level and stronger catches

Trainer XP and Trainer level do not change the CP of a Pokémon you already own. They affect what you find. Pokémon receive their CP when captured, and captured Pokémon generally have higher CP as your Trainer level rises. The Help Center says higher-level Trainers generally encounter higher-CP Pokémon.

You earn Trainer XP through catching, visiting PokéStops and battling. Progress is slow if you only do one of these, so combining them is the practical way to advance. The 2025 leveling update also added a daily egg for eligible Trainers from level 15. It hatches after 1 km and awards 10,000 XP. That is a progression reward, not a CP power-up.

Current leveling context (2025 update)

The official Pokémon GO leveling announcement, dated 2025-10-15, raised the Trainer level cap from 50 to 80. It states the change applies to Trainer level only: “This level cap increase only affects Trainer level and not Pokémon.” Levels above 70 also require Level-Up Research tasks. The announcement describes these task requirements for levels 71–80, while the Help Center describes a task gate from level 70 onward. Check the in-game requirement for the level you are working toward.

The announcement published these total XP thresholds:

These figures come from the 2025 official announcement and apply to the level cap as stated then.

Choosing between the routes

Goal What you spend or do Limits Effect on a Pokémon you already own
Power Up Stardust plus that family’s Candy; Candy XL at higher levels Candy XL needs Trainer level 31 or higher to first collect; costs rise as CP grows Raises CP and HP directly
Evolution Species-specific Candy plus any item, task, trade, lure or buddy-walking requirement Conditions vary by species; not stated for species without a listed requirement Raises CP and HP, generally, as a one-time change
Trainer progression and catching Trainer XP from catching, PokéStops and battling Slow on its own; the 2025 level cap change affects Trainer level only None; affects only Pokémon you catch later

Practical order of operations

  • Check the Power Up preview for your strongest candidate before spending any Candy.
  • Check the evolution screen for that species, and compare its Candy cost with the next Power Up.
  • Keep Candy XL in mind for higher power-ups, and confirm your Trainer level allows it.
  • If you want stronger Pokémon in general, work on Trainer XP, since it changes what appears in the wild rather than what you already own.

Limits of the official guidance

The Help Center’s Powering Up page carried a last-updated date more than a year old when this guide was prepared, so the costs shown in your game are the authority for your specific Pokémon. The official material does not include a controlled test of time or resources needed per CP gained, and it does not rank species or methods by efficiency. Any claim that one route is always fastest would go beyond what those sources establish.

Official guidance also does not cover account state, such as how much Stardust or Candy a given player holds. Those values vary, so they decide which route is fastest for you more than any general ranking would.
