Scorch is a fire-associated ailment in Path of Exile that lowers an enemy’s elemental resistances. It does not reduce only fire resistance, and it does not deal damage over time. Its strength depends on how much fire damage a hit deals compared with the target’s ailment threshold, and it is capped at a 30% reduction.
What Scorch actually does
Scorch is listed on the PoE Wiki as an elemental ailment whose effect is a reduction to the target’s elemental resistances, meaning fire, cold and lightning together. The fire association comes from how it is applied, not from which resistance it hits. That distinction matters when you plan a build: Scorch is a debuff that makes every elemental hit land harder, not a fire-only penalty.
Scorch is also separate from Ignite. In the PoE Wiki’s description it is a non-damaging effect. It does not tick damage over time the way Ignite does, so the two should be evaluated on different terms.
How the magnitude is calculated
The PoE Wiki gives Scorch’s magnitude as:
E = 50 × (D / T)^0.4
- D is the fire damage the hit deals.
- T is the target’s ailment threshold.
- E is the resulting reduction, with the cap of 30% applied on top.
The wiki notes that this formula does not account for increased ailment effect. Modifiers that boost ailment effect therefore sit outside the calculation as described, and the page does not spell out how they combine with the result, so check the current wording of the modifier you are using.

What the numbers look like
The table below uses the formula above to show how the result changes with the fire damage share of the threshold. These are calculated values, not in-game test results, and they assume the cap is applied after the formula.

The formula reaches the 30% cap at a fire-damage share of roughly 0.28 of the threshold. That is the point where the formula equals the cap under its stated assumptions. It is not a universal breakpoint for players. Ailment effect and the actual threshold of a given target change the outcome, so treat 0.28 as a reference point for the formula rather than a rule to build around.

The ailment threshold
The threshold that Scorch uses is usually the monster’s maximum life. The PoE Wiki says it can differ for some especially high-life bosses. Grinding Gear Games introduced monster ailment thresholds in the 3.9.0 patch, describing them as matching maximum life in the great majority of cases, with exceptions such as The Shaper.
In practice this means you cannot judge Scorch’s strength on a boss by its health bar alone. If a fight’s damage numbers do not match your expectations, check whether that encounter uses a different threshold.

Duration and how it has changed
The PoE Wiki lists Scorch’s base duration as four seconds. That is a base value: duration modifiers, and changes made in later patches, can alter the duration you see on a target.
Scorch’s numbers have changed over time. The 3.10.0 patch notes from 2020 record two changes:

The same patch note also gave Brittle and Sap the four-second base duration. Earlier, the 3.9.0 patch notes stated that the alternate ailments Sap, Scorch and Brittle “have a slightly different calculation as they have lower caps on their magnitudes.” Scorch’s behaviour therefore has to be read against the patch it comes from.
Scorch compared with Exposure and Ignite
- Scorch versus Ignite: Scorch lowers resistances and deals no damage itself. Ignite is a damage-over-time ailment. Discussing one as if it were the other leads to wrong conclusions about damage output.
- Scorch versus Exposure: Scorch is an ailment, while Exposure is a resistance-reducing debuff. A Path of Exile forum thread draws this distinction, but it is player discussion rather than an official mechanics page, so use it as a high-level guide. Always check the exact wording of the skill, support gem or modifier you are looking at.
The display problem
Grinding Gear Games’ 3.25.0d patch notes said: “We’re still investigating reports of Scorch values on the UI being inaccurate.” That is a documented concern about what the interface shows, not a statement about what the game calculates. This article cannot confirm whether the display issue was later fixed. If the numbers on screen look inconsistent with your calculations, compare them against the current patch notes and the PoE Wiki before drawing conclusions.
