The normal randomTickSpeed value is 3 in Java Edition and 1 in Bedrock Edition. There is no single shared default, so the edition you are playing determines the correct number. You can check the value in any world with /gamerule randomTickSpeed.
What the rule controls
randomTickSpeed sets how often random block ticks occur. Random ticks drive processes such as crop and plant growth and leaf decay. It is a game rule for random block updates only. It does not change the overall game tick rate, so it should not be described as a general game speed setting.
Mojang’s Java Edition Snapshot 23w31a, published on 2023-08-02, extended the rule to snow and ice accumulation. From that snapshot onward, the rule affects how quickly snow and ice build up, in the same way it affects crops and other randomly ticking blocks.

| Bedrock Edition | 1 | /gamerule randomTickSpeed 1 |

How to check or restore the setting
- Open the world and enter the chat or command field.
- Type
/gamerule randomTickSpeedand press Enter to query the current value. - If the value differs from the default for your edition, type
/gamerule randomTickSpeed 3on Java Edition or/gamerule randomTickSpeed 1on Bedrock Edition, then press Enter. - Run the query again to confirm the new value.
The command uses the same basic form in both editions. Only the default number differs, so use the value that matches the edition you are playing. You need permission to run commands in the world. Microsoft Learn describes /gamerule as the command that both sets and queries game-rule values, and its Bedrock page documents integer syntax for this rule.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
What the value means in practice
- Values above the default make random-tick processes such as crop growth and leaf decay happen more often.
- A value of 0 or less disables random ticks, according to the Microsoft Learn and Minecraft Wiki references. Plant growth and leaf decay stop under that setting.
- Very large values are the least settled part of the rule. Microsoft Learn documents 4096 as the Bedrock maximum. The Minecraft Wiki says values above 4096 make plant growth and leaf decay instantaneous. Those two statements do not describe the boundary identically, so do not treat 4096 as a cross-edition cutoff without checking the page for your edition.
Which phrasing matches your question
Searches such as “default randomTickSpeed in Java” and “Bedrock random tick speed” are edition-specific versions of the same question. The answers are 3 and 1 respectively, and they are not interchangeable. If you are unsure which edition a world uses, check your game’s launcher or main menu before changing the value.
The rule is set per world, so changing it in one world does not affect others.
