Tomodachi Collection is the original Nintendo DS game from 2009, released only in Japan. Tomodachi Life is its successor on the Nintendo 3DS, which Japan released as Tomodachi Collection: New Life. They are separate games on different hardware, not two editions of one title. Nintendo’s official descriptions show that the 3DS game keeps the same island-and-Mii premise and adds a set of features the original did not have.

Are they the same game?

No. The two titles share a premise, not a cartridge or a release. Both ask you to create Miis modeled on yourself, your family, or your friends, then watch those Miis live, socialize, and form relationships on a small island. The original is the DS game, and Tomodachi Life is the 3DS game that continues the series. Treat them as a predecessor and its sequel.

Release history at a glance

Title Hardware Japanese release Release outside Japan Japanese title
Tomodachi Collection Nintendo DS June 18, 2009 (Nintendo’s Japanese site) Not released outside Japan (Nintendo UK) Tomodachi Collection
Tomodachi Life Nintendo 3DS Not stated in the sources reviewed for this article; released in Japan as Tomodachi Collection: New Life June 6, 2014 (Nintendo UK listing) Tomodachi Collection: New Life

The 2014 date is the one Nintendo UK lists for Europe, so it should not be read as a worldwide launch date.

What the original DS game offers

Nintendo presents Tomodachi Collection as an open-ended social simulation on a small island. You create Miis and set their appearance, personality, and voice. Miis can become friends, quarrel, or fall in love. You can listen to their concerns and give them things, but the game sets no fixed objective. Nintendo describes the options as improving resident satisfaction, collecting treasures, or simply watching what happens.

What Tomodachi Life (New Life) adds

Nintendo’s overview for the 3DS game keeps the island and relationship premise, listing friendship, conflict, romance, Mii requests, play, food, marriage, and children. Its feature page highlights the following additions. The list reflects what Nintendo chose to emphasize, not necessarily every difference between versions.

Family and relationships

  • Married Miis can move into a house, have children, and later see those children become independent. This is the clearest life-simulation addition Nintendo documents.

Appearance, food, and home

  • More expressive Mii faces.
  • A broader range of food, clothing, and interior choices.
  • Hats, which were not part of the original’s listed options.

Places and connectivity

  • Additional activity places and facilities on the island.
  • StreetPass features for importing Miis and receiving visitors.
  • SpotPass distribution of items.

Which one should you choose?

If you want the series’ DS origins and can accept a Japan-only release, the original is the choice, but check the copy’s language and region before buying, because it was never sold with a localized English release. For most readers, the 3DS game is the practical choice: it has the localized Tomodachi Life release, and it includes the family, appearance, and connectivity features Nintendo highlights. This recommendation is an inference from the documented platform, regional, and feature differences, not a report of hands-on play.

Tomodachi Life - Nintendo 3DS
  • Create Mii characters for people you know, such as your friends, parents, your teacher, plus anyone else you’ve ever dreamt of befriending
  • Characters in Tomodachi Life act as living, relatable characters with a voice and a personality all their own
  • Players become the director to their Mii characters' lives by helping them find love and happiness

Series context: Nintendo’s wording and sales figure

Nintendo UK’s official Tomodachi Life page describes the game as “a quirky game starring you and everyone you know”. The page attributes this wording to Nintendo’s product description and names no individual speaker. For the Japanese original, no comparable English sentence from an official overview was identified, so no English quote from that page is offered here.

In a May 2014 announcement, Nintendo UK reported over 5.5 million copies sold across the series. That figure is a series-wide total as of 2014. It is not a current total, and it is not broken down by individual game.

Do not confuse it with Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream

Nintendo has also announced Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream for the Nintendo Switch, with an April 16 launch date given in its announcement. It is a later entry and is not the 3DS game discussed above. According to Nintendo Support, the software has no content differences between Switch and Switch 2; on Switch 2, gameplay uses that hardware’s capabilities, such as faster loading.
