Cutiefly is most likely inspired by a bee fly, specifically Anastoechus nitidulus. The official Pokédex calls it the “Bee Fly Pokémon,” while an entomological article identifies that species as its apparent model. That is a scholarly interpretation, not a confirmed statement from a Pokémon designer.
Is Cutiefly a bee or a fly?
Cutiefly is a fictional Pokémon, not a real animal. Its official Pokédex category is “Bee Fly Pokémon,” and its listed types are Bug and Fairy. A bee fly is a true fly: the entomological article classifies the proposed model in order Diptera, family Bombyliidae. “Bee” in the common name can make the distinction confusing.
The official Pokémon Pokédex describes Cutiefly as tiny and notes its long proboscis. Those traits fit the bee-fly comparison, but the Pokédex does not name a real species as the design source.
Which real species is Cutiefly based on?
In a 2018 article in Journal of Geek Studies, entomologist R. N. Kittel wrote that “Cutiefly appears to be based on the bee fly, specifically the species Anastoechus nitidulus (Fabricius, 1794).” Kittel places the Pokémon under Diptera and Bombyliidae. The wording “appears to be based on” matters: the species match is an interpretation of the design, not a creator-confirmed fact.
#1 Best Overall
- Adorable Cutiefly, the Bee Fly Pokémon, feeds on nectar and pollen—maybe that’s why this plush version looks so sweet! Soft with embroidered details, it will add a pretty presence to your decor or Pokémon collection.
- Soft fabric and embroidered details
- Care Instructions: Surface Wash Only
- Item Dimensions: 6 x 4 x 6 inches (15.2 x 10.2 x 15.2 cm)
- Pokémon Center Original
The journal article’s description of Cutiefly as tiny with large wings, alongside the Pokédex’s long-proboscis description, helps explain the resemblance. These are clues behind the comparison, not proof that the designers used that exact species.

Cutiefly’s Fairy typing and name give it a fantasy dimension beyond its likely insect model. Bulbapedia also suggests possible fairyfly or fairy imagery and interprets the English name as combining “cutie” and “fly,” with a possible play on “cutie pie.” These are plausible readings, not established design credits.
For the real-animal identification, the strongest distinction is between the official category and the proposed species: the Pokédex says “Bee Fly Pokémon,” while Kittel’s 2018 article proposes Anastoechus nitidulus as the apparent model.
