There is no password to find. The basement terminal in the Museum of Freedom in Concord is a hacking challenge, and the locked gate beside it can be picked instead. Neither route requires a code.
Why there is no password
The Museum of Freedom is a Concord location in Fallout 4 tied to the Minutemen quest “When Freedom Calls.” The basement generator room has a terminal behind a novice-locked door, and that terminal is what players usually mean when they search for “the museum password.” The Fallout Wiki’s Museum of Freedom page and its When Freedom Calls walkthrough both describe the terminal as a lock to be bypassed in game, not a code written down somewhere in the building.

The Wonderful Museums explainer on this question (updated April 10, 2026) reaches the same conclusion: no physical password exists for the basement terminal, and the two alternatives are hacking the terminal or picking the novice gate.
Your two ways past the basement lock
Both routes lead toward the same area, so choose whichever suits your character.

| Route | What it involves | Best if |
|---|---|---|
| Hack the novice terminal | Solve the terminal hacking minigame at the basement generator terminal. | You are comfortable with the hacking minigame and do not carry lockpicking tools. |
| Pick the novice security gate | Use lockpicking on the novice-locked gate. The gate leads to the optional fusion core. | You have a bobby pin and want to skip the terminal. |
The gate is the door to the fusion core, which the When Freedom Calls walkthrough describes as an optional area of the basement. The Fallout Wiki’s Museum of Freedom page lists the novice lock on this gate and the terminal as separate obstacles, so picking the gate does not depend on solving the terminal first.
Don’t confuse it with Sturges’s office terminal
Upstairs, the terminal Sturges uses in his office is a separate terminal, and the Museum of Freedom page also lists it as novice-locked. It is not the basement generator terminal and it is not the security gate. If the password you are looking for appears on a screen upstairs, you are at a different lock.

What is and is not established
- Established: the basement terminal is a hacking challenge, and the gate beside it has a novice lock that can be picked (Fallout Wiki, Museum of Freedom page; Wonderful Museums, updated April 10, 2026).
- Established: the gate leads to the fusion core, an optional area in the basement (Fallout Wiki, When Freedom Calls walkthrough).
- Not established: any code, note, or in-game clue that names a password for the basement terminal. None appears in the sources above.
The question also has a common mix-up with other Fallout 4 terminals that use passwords or hints. Those are separate locations and are not covered here.
These facts describe the game as documented by these guides. They do not say which version or platform the wording applies to, so if an in-game label looks different from the one described here, check the Fallout Wiki’s Museum of Freedom page for the current version of the layout.
