Warlocks can also be built for personal damage and for controlling crowded areas. Bungie’s official getting-started guide describes Warlocks as “Excellent healers” who can also use their abilities “to damage foes or empower their Fire team.” Bungie adds that these are broad descriptions: the abilities and gear a player equips determine the role the Warlock actually plays.
Healing and empowering allies
This is the Warlock’s clearest strength. The class’s Rift can heal the Warlock and nearby allies, or increase their damage, depending on which Rift variant is equipped. Bungie says Solar Warlocks are the most proficient class at granting and maintaining the healing and damage-buff effects that Solar provides. Other classes can build toward some of those effects too, so Warlock’s advantage is in how reliably it can keep them up rather than in exclusive access.
Solar Well of Radiance in high-level content
Bungie’s new-player guide notes that Warlocks are often relied upon in higher-level content such as raids for Solar Well of Radiance, which it describes as a healing ability. That reputation reflects how teams use the ability in demanding activities. It does not mean every team needs a Warlock or a Well of Radiance; the value depends on the encounter and on what the rest of the fireteam brings.
Personal damage
Warlock is not limited to supporting others. Bungie’s class overview explicitly lists damaging foes as one of the things Warlock abilities are used for, so a player who wants to contribute kills directly can build for that. The strongest personal-damage build changes with balance patches, and no current ranking of Warlock builds is claimed here. Check the subclass and ability descriptions in your game for the numbers that apply to your version.

Area control and ability loops
Warlock can also shape a fight by controlling space. Bungie’s Prismatic example describes using Bleak Watcher and Penumbral Blast to lock down a room, then feeding ability damage into a repeating ability cycle. This is a control-oriented way to play: the Warlock limits where enemies can go and keeps its abilities cycling, rather than focusing on a single healing or damage role.
Why the subclass and build decide the role
Because the class is so broad, the same Warlock can play very differently depending on what is equipped. Class abilities, subclasses, armor, and perks all shape how a character plays. Bungie describes Rift variants as either healing or empowering, and says build choices determine a Guardian’s role. Bungie’s new-player guide puts it more simply, calling Warlocks “Strategists and, if wanted, excellent healers; ideal for those who favor magic classes.”

Choosing a Warlock role
| If you want to… | Warlock direction | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Help a team survive | Healing Rift and Solar support tools | The Rift can heal allies, and Bungie identifies Solar Warlocks as especially proficient at maintaining team healing effects. |
| Help allies hit harder | Empowering Rift and Solar buffs | Bungie describes the Rift as able to empower the Warlock and allies, and highlights Solar’s damage-buff role. |
| Deal damage personally | Damage-focused subclass and ability build | Bungie’s class overview says Warlocks can use abilities to damage foes. Which build is strongest changes with balance patches; no current ranking is stated here. |
| Control a crowded area | Control-oriented build, such as the Prismatic room-lockdown approach | Bungie’s Prismatic overview uses Bleak Watcher and Penumbral Blast to lock down rooms and feed a repeating ability cycle. |
These are playstyle directions, not a ranking of which Warlock build is best. To decide, work through the following:
- Identify the job. Decide whether you want to heal, buff allies, deal personal damage, or control space.
- Check the activity. Consider what the content demands, such as sustained healing in a long raid or crowd control in a busy open-world area.
- Use what you have unlocked. Your subclass, abilities, armor, and perks decide what is practical right now.
- Experiment. Bungie describes builds as flexible and recommends trying different subclass and gear combinations to see which suits your playstyle.
Soul Siphon and upcoming changes
Bungie’s June 4, 2026 developer preview describes a Void Warlock Aspect called Soul Siphon. In the preview, a powered melee hit readies the Aspect. Activating the melee then drains enemies in front of the Warlock, dealing damage and gathering Overshield and class ability energy. The preview also describes possible interactions with Feed the Void, Child of the Old Gods, and Exotic armor.

A separate Bungie article frames the related Monument of Triumph ability changes as upcoming. A developer preview describes intended design, not necessarily what has shipped. Before relying on Soul Siphon or the Monument of Triumph changes in a build, check the in-game Aspect description and Bungie’s current release notes to confirm they are live and how they work.
