If The Sims 4 has no Mods folder, create one in the game’s user-data folder: Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods. Then enable mods in the game options and relaunch. Do not put the folder in the game’s installation directory.
Find the folder The Sims 4 actually uses
Open the Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 folder where the game stores its user files. The usual Windows path is Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4. EA’s installation instructions cover PC and Mac, but the exact visible Documents location can differ if Documents has been redirected or synced.
EA Help explicitly says, “If there isn’t a Mods folder here, you can create one.” Create a new folder named exactly Mods inside the user-data The Sims 4 folder. Do not create it in the game’s program or installation folder. EA Help: How to install Mods in The Sims 4
Add the files and enable mods
- Put the mod or custom-content files in the new
Modsfolder. Extract downloaded archives first; the compressed archive itself is not the mod file the game loads. - Launch The Sims 4 and open Game Options > Other.
- Check Enable Custom Content and Mods. If you use script mods, also check Script Mods Allowed.
- Apply the settings and relaunch the game. Mods do not become active until after the restart.
For file organization, EA forum guidance says package-only mods can be placed in subfolders up to five levels deep, while script mods should be no more than one folder deep. Follow the creator’s installation instructions if they specify a different arrangement. EA Forums: How to Use Mods and CC

If the Mods folder exists but content does not appear
Check for a second Sims 4 folder
Cloud syncing or a redirected Documents folder can leave more than one The Sims 4 folder visible. Verify that you put Mods inside the user-data folder used by your game, rather than a duplicate or an installation folder. If you are unsure which Documents location is active, use the folder in which the game’s other user files are being stored.
Confirm the file type and destination
Make sure the downloaded files were extracted and that they are intended for the Mods folder. Saved Sims and lots may include Tray files, which belong in the Tray folder rather than Mods. Check the creator’s instructions for any specific install steps.

Consider recent game updates
After an update, check the mod creator’s current compatibility notes before turning mods back on. EA recommends testing the game without mods first when troubleshooting mod-related problems.
