It was not a standalone game, and it was not necessarily the first game mode ever to use any battle-royale-like idea. The answer depends on what counts: a mix of scavenging, single-life elimination and a shrinking play area, rather than any one of those mechanics on its own.
What was the first battle royale game?
DayZ: Battle Royale, created by Brendan Greene, is the strongest candidate for the first recognizable modern battle royale mode. It began as a mod within the DayZ mod for Arma 2; a retrospective by The New Yorker dates its appearance online to September 2013.
That answer is deliberately narrower than “the first game ever with battle royale elements.” Earlier or parallel modes shared some of the format’s ingredients, and the available historical accounts do not establish an absolute first across every game, server and mode. Calling Greene’s work the first recognizable modern battle royale mod is more defensible than claiming no predecessor existed.
Why does the definition matter?
Battle royale is a combination of mechanics, not a single invention such as scavenging or last-player-standing competition. In its recognizable modern form, players start with little or no equipment, search for weapons, have one life, and must contend with a play area that shrinks or otherwise forces them together. DayZ: Battle Royale brought those elements together in a way that helped define the genre’s later lineage.

Earlier examples complicate a simple “first.” Game Informer describes Minecraft’s Survival Games as featuring a central weapon cache, scavenging and a last-player-standing winner, placing it in the same broad period as DayZ’s arrival on Arma 2. The account does not establish a precise date that settles priority against every other mode. A shared mechanic or similar objective alone does not prove which mode came first or which directly shaped the genre.
How the modern format developed
From the Battle Royale story to a playable mode
Koushun Takami’s Battle Royale novel, published in 1999, and its film adaptation are cultural antecedents for the name and premise—not videogames that answer the question. Greene also drew on gameplay ideas from DayZ and the Survivor GameZ event. In an interview with Unreal Engine, he explained: “I started making the Battle Royale game-mode as a mod for the Arma series four years ago, because I wanted to make something that I wanted to play.”
From DayZ to Arma 3
Greene later moved the mode from the DayZ mod to Arma 3. In a 2015 PC Gamer interview, he summed up the origin: “Battle Royale started way back in the DayZ mod.” The interview reported more than 200,000 downloads and about 50,000 active players in a given month for the Arma 3 mod at that time; those are historical interview figures, not current player counts.
From modding to standalone games
Greene’s work on the Arma mod and his consultation on H1Z1 preceded his role directing PUBG with Bluehole (now Krafton). PUBG helped popularize the format as a standalone game, but it was not the origin of Greene’s battle royale mode. The Epic Games Store’s history recounts this route from DayZ: Battle Royale through Arma 3 and into PUBG.

Was Minecraft Survival Games the first?
It is a relevant precursor, but the documented comparison does not settle the matter. Game Informer’s account describes recognizable features—scavenging, a central cache and a last-player-standing outcome—without supplying a precise date that establishes priority over Greene’s mod or every other early mode. It is therefore safest to describe Minecraft Survival Games as an early example with battle-royale-like mechanics, rather than state that it definitively was or was not the first.
The useful distinction is between sharing some ingredients and occupying the documented lineage of the modern format. Greene’s account connects his mode to DayZ, then to the Arma 3 mod and later work on H1Z1 and PUBG. The available sources support that continuity, but they do not provide an exhaustive catalogue of every earlier game mode.

Was PUBG or H1Z1 first?
Neither was the first recognizable battle royale mode in Greene’s documented lineage: his DayZ-based mod came earlier. H1Z1 and PUBG belong to the later transition from mods and consultation work to standalone releases and wider popularization. That is different from asking which of those standalone games launched first; the historical sources cited here are sufficient to distinguish them from the earlier mod, not to establish a full release-date comparison between the two.
