The short answer: Ninja Gaiden (2004) is the original Xbox game. Ninja Gaiden Black is an expanded Xbox re-release of that game that adds the Hurricane Pack material, difficulty options, and Mission Mode. Ninja Gaiden Sigma is a PlayStation 3 version built on Black that adds playable Rachel content. The main differences are platform, content, and characters. The smaller differences are mostly combat and item changes that show up in Black and Sigma.
Part of the confusion comes from the word “Normal.” In this context it most likely refers to the original 2004 game, not the Normal difficulty setting. The two are easy to mix up, so both are covered below.

Sources: the release history is summarized in the Ninja Gaiden (2004 video game) reference entry, the Black listing is on Xbox Home, and the Master Collection details come from the official Team Ninja Master Collection page. Store availability for the Master Collection can change, so check the official page before buying.
Main difference 1: the original versus Black
Black is the same core game with more on top. The reference listing describes it as the original compiled with Hurricane Pack material, plus added difficulty settings, a Mission Mode, and bonus content. A contemporary listing also describes unlockable arcade Ninja Gaiden content. If you have only played the 2004 release, expect the same story and the same Ryu Hayabusa campaign, with more options around it.

- An endless rain of miasma hangs over a near-future Tokyo in the wake of an ancient enemy’s resurrection. The fate of the city lies in the hands of young ninja prodigy, Yakumo.
The content differences matter more than the presentation changes. Several of the combat and item changes covered below appear in Black and not in the original, so a player who started on the 2004 build will notice different tools and balance.
Main difference 2: Black versus Sigma
Sigma is not another name for Black. It is a separate PlayStation 3 version built on Black, and its defining addition is playable Rachel content. Sigma includes three Rachel chapters. Official Master Collection material confirms that both Ryu and Rachel are playable in Sigma.

- Become a one-man assault team, fighting the army of the so-called Holy Emperor to reclaim the magic sword stolen from your lineage
- Learn to fight like a ninja master - Fast, intuitive controls make learning deadly fighting combos quick -- you can even develop your own combos

- Amazing visual effects suck you into the battles - realistic combat combined with beautiful, detailed graphics
Beyond the Rachel content, the sources reviewed here do not establish a complete authoritative list of Sigma changes. Team Ninja’s developer interview describes Sigma as adding weapons, costumes, and modes while keeping the core action and difficulty of the non-Sigma versions. That is a broad developer description, not a confirmed change log. Claims about specific enemy placements, puzzles, or boss tuning in Sigma come from player comparisons and are not established here, so treat them as unverified.
Main difference 3: what the Master Collection includes
The Master Collection is the most common route for newcomers, and it is where readers most often assume Black is included. It is not. The official page lists Sigma, Sigma 2, and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge. If you want the Black edition specifically, the Master Collection will not give it to you. The original 2004 Xbox game is not in it either, so the Master Collection is a route to Sigma and the later titles, not to the full lineage.

Smaller differences: combat and items in Black
A community-authored Ninja Gaiden Black combat FAQ on GameFAQs, written by aaxe, lists selected changes from the original and the Hurricane Packs. The guide is not official documentation, and its author limits the list to combat-oriented items, so it is best read as a set of examples rather than a full catalog. The changes it describes are:
- Smoke Bombs: a new projectile item.
- Lunar staff: a major addition for players who do not have the Hurricane Packs.
- Nunchaku: available from the start on difficulties other than Normal.
- Kitetsu: becomes upgradeable and no longer drains life.
- On-landing moves and the Dark Dragon Blade: the guide describes changes to both, though this summary does not repeat its details.
Black also varies by difficulty, according to the same FAQ. Relative difficulty depends on the edition, the difficulty setting, the specific encounter, and how familiar the player is with the series. Saying that one version is simply harder or easier across the board is not supported by the evidence reviewed here.

What “Normal” means in the title
If the title’s “Normal” refers to the difficulty setting, the relevant point is that Black offers difficulty options and that Nunchaku unlock from the start on non-Normal difficulties. Check the Normal and other settings in each version’s options menu before comparing play experiences. If “Normal” refers to the 2004 release, then it is the original game described above.
Developer perspective
Fumihiko Yasuda, speaking to Niche Gamer about the Master Collection, said: “The difficulty is the same as the original Sigma version, but we have also added the MASTER NINJA mode so it’s a pretty intense challenge.” The interview is a developer statement about the Master Collection and should be read as such; it describes Sigma’s difficulty and the added mode, and it does not establish that every encounter is identical across editions. The full interview is the primary source for that quote.
