Neither game is objectively better. Old School RuneScape (OSRS) suits players who want an older-style game with its own ongoing development. RuneScape (commonly called RS3) suits players who prefer ability-based combat, a modern interface and newer quality-of-life changes. The right pick depends on which of those you want, and trying both before paying for membership is the surest way to decide.
Which one fits you
| If you want… | Lean toward |
|---|---|
| An older-style feel, rooted in RuneScape as it was in 2007 | OSRS |
| Ability-based combat from the Evolution of Combat update | RS3 |
| A modern interface, with an older-style option available as Legacy Mode | RS3 |
| A game you follow as its own separate world, not a mode of another | OSRS |
| To sample both before committing | Try both free-to-play experiences first |
These are preference-based leanings. Neither game has been shown to be easier, more skillful or higher quality, and player comments on the subject are personal opinions rather than survey results.
What the two games are
Old School RuneScape
Jagex describes Old School RuneScape as a backup of RuneScape from 2007 that launched in 2013. Since then it has evolved into a distinct game. New characters start from scratch. It is best treated as its own ongoing game, not as a graphics option or a settings toggle inside modern RuneScape.
RuneScape (RS3)
RuneScape is the modern game in the franchise, and it is the version most players mean by “RS3.” Its Evolution of Combat (EoC) update changed both combat and the interface, introducing abilities. RuneScape also includes a Legacy Mode, which lets players use an older-style combat system and interface inside RuneScape. Legacy Mode is useful if you like that feel, but it does not make RS3 the same game as OSRS, which keeps evolving on its own track.

How the two games differ
Combat
This is the biggest preference divide. RS3 uses the ability-based system introduced with EoC. OSRS keeps the older combat approach that comes from its 2007-based design. If you enjoy managing a set of abilities on a bar, RS3 will feel like the natural home. If you prefer the older rhythm, OSRS is built around it.
Interface
RS3’s interface was changed alongside EoC, and Legacy Mode offers the older layout as an option. OSRS presents the older interface as its default. Try the interface in both games before deciding, because it affects daily play more than any single feature list will show.

Content and progression
Both games keep adding content, but they follow different paths. Jagex describes OSRS as offering quests, social skilling, competitive modes and co-op play. The two games’ content histories have diverged, so choose based on the kind of world you want to join and the updates you want to follow.

Membership and the cost of trying both
Both games are digital and offer membership content. Jagex’s 12-month membership page lists full map access, exclusive quests, skills and future content. Membership prices and entitlements can change, so read the current terms on Jagex’s site before you buy. No direct price comparison between the two games has been established.
Because the cheapest way to decide is to play, sample both free-to-play experiences before committing to membership in either.
Best Value
How to decide in four steps
- Start a character in OSRS and play through its first combat and skilling hour without comparing it to anything else.
- Start a character in RS3 and try its combat with the default abilities. Then open Legacy Mode in its settings and try the older-style combat and interface for comparison.
- Note which combat and interface you actually enjoyed over several sessions, not only on first impression.
- Only then look at membership terms and the 2026 announcements for the game that matched your preferences.
Why the question comes up
Player discussions on Reddit often phrase the question as “Should I start with Old School RuneScape or RuneScape 3?” or ask why someone would recommend RS3 over OSRS. Commenters tend to describe OSRS as the older style and RS3 as the version with abilities, graphics and conveniences. These descriptions are individual opinions, but they match the official differences above.
