Hallowed is usually the better defensive choice; Chlorophyte is the more offensive one. Hallowed’s Holy Protection effect dodges an attack when available, while Chlorophyte adds a Leaf Crystal that attacks nearby enemies and reduces damage taken by 5%. The better set depends on your class, chosen headpiece, and whether you value a timed defensive buffer or extra offense.
This comparison is about Terraria armor mechanics, not controlled damage-per-second or boss-survival testing. The Official Terraria Wiki’s armor pages cover Desktop, Console, and Mobile, while noting legacy differences for Old-gen Console and 3DS. Check your platform and version if you play on a legacy release; some details cited by the pages are version-specific.

What each armor set does best
Hallowed: a timed dodge and class-specific bonuses
Hallowed armor is a Hardmode set available after defeating one mechanical boss. Its defining set effect, Holy Protection, lets you dodge the next attack. The listed cooldown is 30 seconds, and it begins after the dodge activates. This is a timed defensive effect—not continuous invulnerability. Hallowed’s four headpieces let you select bonuses for melee, ranged, magic, or summon builds. One complete set with a chosen headpiece requires 54 Hallowed Bars, according to the Official Terraria Wiki.
Chlorophyte: a Leaf Crystal and damage reduction
Chlorophyte armor summons a Leaf Crystal that shoots nearby enemies and reduces damage taken by 5%. The Wiki characterizes it as the more offensive option compared with Hallowed. Its exact class bonuses depend on the headpiece, so compare the matching variant rather than treating the set as one universal stat profile. The Official Terraria Wiki does not establish a complete set of comparable class-specific totals in the material cited here.

Compare the same class and headpiece
The listed defense totals differ by headpiece. These figures compare each set’s corresponding class option; they do not show that defense alone decides which set performs better.
| Build | Hallowed headpiece | Hallowed full-set defense | Chlorophyte headpiece | Chlorophyte full-set defense |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Melee | Mask | 50 | Mask | 51 |
| Ranged | Helmet | 35 | Helmet | 44 |
| Magic | Headgear | 31 | Headgear | 38 |
| Summon | Hood | 27 | Visor | 33 |
Hallowed’s listed headpiece bonuses are:
- Mask, melee: +17% melee damage and critical strike chance, +10% melee speed, and +8% movement speed.
- Helmet, ranged: +22% ranged damage, +15% ranged critical strike chance, and +8% movement speed.
- Headgear, magic: +19% magic damage and critical strike chance, +100 maximum mana, and +8% movement speed.
- Hood, summon: +17% summon damage, +3 minion slots, +8% movement speed, and +7% critical strike chance. That critical strike bonus does not affect summon weapons.
Both sets have class-specific variants, but the available Chlorophyte figures do not support a full numerical comparison of every damage, mana, and critical-strike bonus. Avoid inferring those missing totals from the defense numbers.

Which set should you choose?
Choose Hallowed when the dodge or its class bonuses matter most
Hallowed is a strong choice if avoiding a hit is especially valuable to you. Its class-specific bonuses can also settle the choice: a mage gets +100 maximum mana from the Headgear, while a summoner gets three additional minion slots from the Hood. Remember that Holy Protection has a cooldown after it triggers, so it is a buffer against an attack rather than dependable protection from every hit.
Choose Chlorophyte when you want its extra offense
Chlorophyte suits players who prefer the Leaf Crystal’s nearby attacks alongside the set’s 5% damage reduction. Its listed full-set defense is higher for each corresponding headpiece in the comparison above, but defense is only one part of the choice; Hallowed’s dodge and the headpieces’ class bonuses also matter.

For a mage preparing to fight Plantera
The specific trade is Hallowed Headgear’s +100 maximum mana and Hallowed’s dodge effect versus Chlorophyte’s Leaf Crystal, 5% damage reduction, and different defense and class-stat profile. Neither set is established as a universal winner against Plantera: the cited sources document item mechanics, not controlled boss-fight outcomes.
Cost and version limits
The Hallowed armor page states that one set with a selected headpiece takes 54 Hallowed Bars. The material available for this comparison does not establish a directly comparable Chlorophyte recipe and progression cost, so it cannot support a claim that one full set is cheaper overall.
The armor pages apply to Desktop, Console, and Mobile, with legacy differences noted for Old-gen Console and 3DS. The Hallowed page cites Desktop 1.4.4.9 source code for an internal armor detail; the Chlorophyte page notes a Desktop 1.4.4.8 fix to the Leaf Crystal’s first-volley cooldown. If you are playing an older or legacy version, verify the relevant mechanics for that release.
