In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022), set up your custom loadout in the Weapons menu before a standard Multiplayer match, or edit it in the pre-match lobby. In most Multiplayer modes, your chosen loadout is assigned when the match starts; you generally should not expect to pause a live match and switch classes. The rules differ in the Firing Range and Warzone modes.
How do you edit your loadout before a match?
- From the main hub, open Weapons.
- Choose a Custom Loadout and adjust its weapons and attachments.
- You can also select and edit loadouts in a pre-match lobby, a feature recorded in the Season 02 patch notes.
The official Season 04 player guide recommends customizing your weapon before entering a match. It says new players will likely reach Rank 4 after a few matches, unlocking Custom Loadout creation; treat that as general progression guidance, not a guarantee for every playlist or game version.

Can you change your loadout during a Multiplayer match in MW2?
In most standard Multiplayer matches, the custom loadout you selected is given to you at the start. The official guide names Gunfight, Gunfight OSP, and Party Modes such as Infected as exceptions to that rule. Those exceptions mean you should not assume the usual custom-loadout assignment applies in those modes.
The pause-menu loadout editing described in the MWII launch overview is for the Firing Range, a practice environment. It is not evidence that you can pause and swap your active class in every live Multiplayer match.

How loadouts work in Warzone
Plunder
The Season 03 patch notes say Plunder players can change their loadout from the pause menu for their next respawn. This is a mode-specific rule and applies to the next respawn, not an immediate class swap.
Battle Royale
Warzone Battle Royale uses a different system from standard Multiplayer: the Season 04 player guide describes obtaining a loadout at a Loadout Drop or buying one at a Buy Station. The Season 01 and Warzone 2.0 launch overview also covers Warzone loadout mechanics.

These details refer to MWII (2022), not the original 2009 Modern Warfare 2 or later Modern Warfare titles. The named exceptions and Plunder behavior come from official 2023 season materials; playlists and game behavior can change, so check the in-game mode menu for a current edge case.
