For Minecraft: Java Edition, start with a mod’s project page or app workflow on an established platform such as CurseForge or Modrinth. These are sensible places to look, not guarantees that every file is harmless. Mojang says Java mods are third-party software it does not create, review, or endorse, and recommends taking the same precautions as with any independently developed software. (Mojang’s Java mods guidance)
Where should you get Java Edition mods?
Use the platform’s real website or official app, then open the specific project page and follow its download flow. CurseForge and Modrinth both host user-created Java projects and publish information about their rules or safeguards. Neither platform’s policies establish that every download has been independently checked for every possible threat.
Prefer a project page that identifies its author, files, supported Minecraft versions, and mod loader. Keep the download within the platform’s own workflow rather than following unfamiliar mirrors, lookalike pages, or redirects to unrelated installers. CurseForge’s moderation policy says external download links for files are not allowed. (CurseForge moderation guidelines)
Are CurseForge and Modrinth safe?
They are established starting points with published policies, but “safe” is not an absolute guarantee. Compare their stated practices and inspect the particular project and release you plan to install.

| What to check | CurseForge | Modrinth |
|---|---|---|
| Scope and published rules | Publishes moderation guidelines, user reporting, and information about automated and manual review. (Moderation guidelines) | Focuses on Java Edition projects and publishes creator disclosure and content-rule information. (Disclosure policy; Content rules) |
| Download route | Use the project’s CurseForge page or app. Its policy disallows external download links for files. (Moderation guidelines) | Use the project’s Modrinth page or its own app/platform flow. The cited policies describe hosting and rules; they do not guarantee the safety of every file. (Disclosure policy; Content rules) |
| What safeguards establish | CurseForge describes automated checks and manual review. Its whitelist policy says whitelisted files still receive automated technical checks, though they skip the manual queue. These controls reduce risk; they do not eliminate it. (Whitelisting policy) | Creator disclosures and moderation rules support transparency, but do not establish that every file has been independently audited for every threat. (Disclosure policy; Content rules) |
| Compatibility | Check the release’s Minecraft version and loader. | Check the release’s Minecraft version and loader. |
There is not enough evidence here to label either platform categorically safer. A platform’s policies are one factor; the individual project, release details, and download route matter too.
How to check a mod before installing it
- Open the genuine platform or app. Navigate to the project rather than trusting a search advertisement or a mirror using similar branding.
- Inspect the project and release details. Check the author, file, supported Minecraft version, and loader against your setup. Mojang warns that game updates can make mods incompatible. (Minecraft EULA)
- Read the description and update information. Make sure the release you choose matches your game and loader; do not assume that a file for another version will work.
- Use the platform’s download flow. Be wary of a purported mod that sends you to an unfamiliar mirror, asks you to install an unrelated executable, or tells you to run commands unrelated to installing the mod.
- Back up important worlds before changing your setup. If an installation causes a crash or conflict, remove or roll back that change and consult the project’s documentation.
What happens if a mod causes a problem?
Mojang says modding can make a game malfunction or become unplayable, and that Minecraft Support cannot assist with problems arising from mod use. The company’s guidance states: “As modding is not officially supported, Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage.” (Java Edition mod guidance)

Why platform checks are not a guarantee
Malware has affected Minecraft mod files before. CurseForge documented its response to a malware incident in 2023 and described process improvements. That is historical evidence of a past incident and response, not an indication that the same threat is currently active. (CurseForge 2023 incident report)

Mojang’s position remains that it does not review or endorse third-party Java mods. The advice above concerns mods for Minecraft: Java Edition. Bedrock add-ons and Marketplace content are a different route; Java mod files and loaders are not instructions for Bedrock. The sources cited here do not establish one universal safety ranking for third-party Bedrock add-on sites, so do not treat Java mod-hosting platforms as a general recommendation for Bedrock downloads.
