As of October 8, 2026, Fortnite v39.40 is not the next Fortnite update. Epic’s ecosystem release notes date it to February 5, 2026. Epic’s official pages do not name a next version number, a confirmed release date, or a downtime window. To find out when maintenance starts, check Epic Games Public Status and FortniteStatus.
Is v39.40 still the latest Fortnite update?
No. Epic’s release notes for v39.40 are dated February 5, 2026, and Epic’s official news listing now carries later 2026 posts, including an October 1, 2026 Fortnitemares announcement. v39.40 is a past release, and it should be read as a historical reference rather than a preview of what comes next.
What v39.40 covered
v39.40 belongs to the Fortnite ecosystem, meaning the tools that creators and editors use to build and publish experiences. Its notes are not a full Battle Royale patch recap. The main items were:
- Creator Portal: a Conversion Rate chart for in-island transactions.
- LEGO templates: a Damage Amplifier device and weapon variations.
- Chapter Seven Pacific Break: new assets, galleries, and prefabs.
- Fixes across Creative, UEFN, the editor, environment tools, and UI workflows.
If you are looking for what changed in Battle Royale or Save the World gameplay in that period, Epic’s ecosystem notes will not answer that question.

What Epic has announced for October 2026
Epic’s October 1, 2026 Fortnitemares post describes the season’s event content. It says an updated Nightmare Island arrives in Reload on October 8. That is refreshed event content, not a numbered game update. The post does not attach a version number to it and does not give a downtime schedule, so it should not be read as the next version of Fortnite.
Where to look for the next update and downtime
Epic publishes different kinds of information in different places. The table below shows what each source can and cannot confirm as of October 8, 2026.

How to check for downtime before you log in
- Open Epic Games Public Status and look for any scheduled maintenance or active incidents.
- Check FortniteStatus for maintenance updates and reports of emerging issues.
- Watch for in-game emergency messaging. Epic’s support guidance says this is posted about 24 hours before planned downtime. This is general guidance, not a promise that every update follows the same schedule.
- When Epic announces a new numbered update, compare its version number with v39.40. A higher number means the update is newer than the February 2026 release described above.
If neither status channel shows scheduled maintenance, Epic has not published a downtime window for the next update, and no version number has been confirmed in the official sources reviewed for this article.
This article reflects Epic’s official pages as of October 8, 2026. Epic may announce a new version or a maintenance window at any time, so check the status channels above for live information.
