Spoilers for Chapter 2: The headless musician wandering Yellow Wind Ridge is Bodhisattva Lingji. He plays a sanxian and uses song to recount the region’s history; the chapter’s ending connects him to the resolution of the Yellow Wind Sage conflict.
Who is the Headless Monk?
The Headless Monk is Lingji, a bodhisattva encountered in headless form as a wandering musician. The game’s journal and the Chapter 2 finale provide the story context for that identity. The available accounts support the identification, but do not establish every detail of how or why Lingji appears this way.
What does his song reveal?
The Headless Monk journal entry describes a musician at Windrest after strange winds begin. Children follow the sound of a sanxian and find a headless monk leaning against a boulder. He helps Chengda stand, heals the child’s bruised leg, and mends his torn clothes, according to the entry as presented by Gamer Guides.
The journal’s translated four-line verse links the musician’s history to betrayal by a follower:

“Sanxian, sanxian, grief and rage untold,
Defeated and demeaned by my follower bold.
Confused, I saw kindness repaid with hate,
The sands obscure the truth, the wind seals my fate.”
This is an English rendering of the in-game journal verse published by Gamer Guides, not a quotation from a historical source. Its reference to a follower’s betrayal ties Lingji’s past to the conflict unfolding on Yellow Wind Ridge, but the verse alone does not settle his motives or make him the simple villain of the chapter.

How does Lingji fit into Chapter 2?
The headless musician is more than an unexplained background figure: his story belongs to the chapter’s resolution. The Yellow Wind Sage’s final cutscene brings Lingji directly into that outcome. Read alongside the journal verse, the sequence makes the betrayal clue relevant to the region’s central conflict rather than an unrelated bit of atmosphere.

Why are there separate Headless Monk and Lingji journal entries?
Guide documentation records two different journal unlock moments in Chapter 2: the Headless Monk entry after the Crouching Tiger Temple cellar sequence, and a separate Bodhisattva Lingji entry after the Yellow Wind Sage’s final cutscene. That split can make searches appear to point to two different characters, but separate entries do not establish separate people.
The Headless Monk entry is associated with the cellar sequence, which requires the Sterness of Stone and Keeness of Tiger, according to Gamer Guides. PowerPyx’s journal unlock guide likewise lists the Headless Monk and Bodhisattva Lingji as distinct entries obtained at those separate story moments. A Black Myth: Wukong character wiki and a scholarly article also identify the Headless Monk as Lingji; the journal and finale are the useful in-game context for understanding why.
