There is no single save folder shared by every Windows PC game. Check the common Windows locations below, then the path for the launcher or save system you use. A path is only a starting point: the exact location depends on the game. Before you move or edit anything, make a separate backup and check whether cloud sync is active.
Common places to check on Windows
Game saves often live in a user-profile folder rather than beside the game’s installed files. Epic Games Support and Steamworks list these common locations:

savegames, which may be inside a game- or launcher-specific location
To open one of these locations, paste its environment-variable path into File Explorer’s address bar. For example, enter %LOCALAPPDATA% or %APPDATA%. This opens the folder, but it does not tell you which game uses it. Windows user folders can also be configured to live somewhere other than their default locations, as Steamworks notes.
Where saves are stored by launcher or save system
Steam
Steam Support gives C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata as the default local storage location for Steam Cloud files. Inside userdata, files are organized into Steam ID folders and then game folders identified by appID. This is where Steam Cloud files are stored locally; it does not mean every Steam game’s active save is in that folder. A game may use one of the common Windows locations or another path chosen by its developer.

Steam Cloud can synchronize saves and other user data. If a file changes in two places before synchronization, Steam may not be able to choose which version to keep automatically. Close the game, confirm sync has finished, and keep a backup before replacing or editing files. Steam Support also says it cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts for users. The bracketed parts are specific to the account and game. Epic also lists Documents, LocalLow, Local, Roaming, Saved Games, Ubisoft-related folders, and savegames as common alternatives because individual games may save elsewhere. See Epic’s guidance on finding local game saves.

Xbox and Microsoft Store PC games
Microsoft documents two possible locations for games that use its Game Saves APIs. The exact folder depends on the game’s package name, account identifier, and service configuration:

These are API-specific examples, not a universal path for every Xbox or Microsoft Store game. Microsoft warns that direct changes on PC can still interact with synchronization and cause conflicts. See Microsoft’s Game Saves walkthroughs.

How to locate a specific game’s save
- Identify the game’s platform and save system. Note whether you launch it through Steam, Epic, Xbox/Microsoft Store, or another service. A game’s developer may use a different save location from its launcher’s cloud-storage folder.
- Check the likely Windows folders. Search the common locations above for a folder named after the game, its developer, or a related service. You can open environment-variable paths directly in File Explorer.
- Check the platform-specific location. For Steam, distinguish the Cloud files under
userdatafrom the game’s active save path. For Epic, check the launcher path as well as the common alternatives. For Xbox or Microsoft Store games, the package-specific API paths may apply. - Look up the exact title in the developer’s support documentation. Search using the game title and, when relevant, its version. If the general folders do not reveal the save, Epic recommends contacting the game developer for its location.
Back up saves before changing them
Once you find a likely save folder, copy it to a separate location before editing, replacing, or moving its contents. An external drive or USB flash drive can serve as an optional backup destination; it is not needed to locate the save.
Close the game and check that cloud synchronization has finished before making changes. Editing local and cloud copies while they are out of sync can create a conflict, and deleting a local file is not a dependable way to clear cloud data. Sync behavior depends on the platform and game, so do not assume the cloud will restore a deleted or overwritten save.
