Where Are Xbox Game Pass Saves Stored? Console, Cloud and PC Explained

Xbox Game Pass saves have no single folder. Console saves use local storage with cloud sync for supported games, while PC save locations vary by game.

There is no single folder or storage location for Xbox Game Pass saves. Where a save lives depends on three things: the platform you play on (Xbox console or Windows PC), whether the game’s save data is synced to the cloud, and the individual game and its version. On a console, saves are kept in local storage and, for supported games, copied to the cloud so they can follow your Microsoft account. On PC, each game sets its own save location, so you need to check that specific title before moving or deleting anything.

Why there is no universal save folder

Game Pass is a subscription that gives access to a catalogue of games. It does not have its own save system. Each game handles its own save data, so a Game Pass title stores saves the same way the same game would if you had bought it outright. Two Game Pass titles on the same PC can store saves in completely different places, and one may use cloud sync while another does not.

Any guide promising one path for all Game Pass saves is misleading. Treat the sections below as a map of the layers to check, not a single address.

Saves on an Xbox console

On an Xbox console, a save is written to the console’s local storage first. For games that support cloud saves, the console then synchronises that data with Microsoft’s cloud under your Microsoft account. This is what lets you resume a game on another console signed into the same account, provided the game supports it.

Xbox Support publishes a cloud game saves FAQ that explains which kinds of save data are synced. Read it for the specific game before assuming your progress is backed up. Xbox Support pages are dynamic, so confirm exact wording and any exceptions on the page itself.

Saves on Windows PC

On Windows, a Game Pass PC game keeps its save files where the game’s developer put them. Some titles store saves in a folder inside your user profile, some in a folder within the game’s install directory, and some sync through the cloud and keep only a local cache. There is no verified Game Pass-wide folder, and no path should be assumed to apply to every game.

To find the right location, check the game’s own support documentation or its settings menu for a save-folder or cloud-save option. Xbox Support also publishes a page on local state and temporary files. Read it before deleting anything manually, because removing the wrong files can wipe progress that has not yet synced.

Comparing the layers

Platform Storage layer What decides the location Where to check
Xbox console Local console storage, plus cloud sync for supported games Whether the game supports cloud saves and whether the console is signed into the account that owns the save Xbox Support cloud game saves FAQ
Windows PC Local save files, which may or may not sync to the cloud The individual game and version; there is no shared Game Pass folder The game’s own support pages and settings, plus the Xbox Support local state and temporary files page
Either platform Game installation files Where you chose to install the game; installation storage is not the same as save storage Console or PC storage settings

Why a save may be missing or not syncing

When progress appears to be missing, the cause is usually a sync problem or the wrong account rather than lost data. Work through these steps in order before deleting anything.

  1. Confirm the game supports cloud saves, using the Xbox Support cloud game saves FAQ or the game’s own documentation.
  2. Check that you are signed in with the same Microsoft account that played the game before.
  3. On a console, connect to the internet and leave the game idle for a few minutes so the sync can complete. Then relaunch the game.
  4. If a sync error appears, look up the exact error text on Xbox Support’s cloud sync error page and follow the steps listed for that error.
  5. Before deleting local save data or choosing between two conflicting copies, back up the save folder or the entire local file set so you can restore it if the choice is wrong.

Does external storage hold Game Pass saves?

Storage used for game installations is not automatically where saves are written. Moving a game to an external drive does not guarantee that its saves move with it, and the save data may stay on the internal drive or in the cloud. Check the game’s save location before assuming an external drive is involved.

Verify where a specific game’s saves are kept before moving any folders, because the location varies by title.
