In Minecraft Java Edition 1.19.3, look for ancient debris underground in the Nether, around Y=16. It does not appear on open surfaces, so you will need to tunnel or dig through Nether rock to find it. Once you locate a block, you must mine it with a diamond-tier pickaxe or better.
Which dimension and where in it
Ancient debris generates only in the Nether. The Overworld and The End do not produce it. Because the block does not generate exposed to air, a surface scan of Nether ledges, lava lakes, or open caverns is usually wasted time. Plan to dig into solid Nether terrain and look for the dark, speckled block as your mining reveals it.
The Y-level to target
The Minecraft Wiki’s Ancient Debris reference identifies Y=16 as the altitude where the most ancient debris appears on average. Treat that as a starting target, not a guarantee. A single tunnel at Y=16 can come up empty, and debris can be found at other heights.
To read your altitude in Java Edition:
- Start or load a world and make sure you are in the Nether.
- Press F3 on your keyboard. On some laptops you may need to hold Fn as well.
- Read the coordinates in the upper-left block of the overlay. The second number is your Y value.
- Dig horizontally or stair-step until that second number sits at or near 16.
Pressing F3 again closes the overlay, and you can keep it open while you mine.

How to find it
The official Minecraft guide and the Minecraft Wiki’s mining tutorial describe three approaches. The sources do not measure which is fastest, so the comparison below is qualitative.
Method 1: Mining through Nether blocks
This is the most direct route. Tunnel through Nether rock at around Y=16, scanning the walls and floor of each passage as you go. It needs only a pickaxe, food, and light, and it does not depend on any structure appearing in your world. The cost is time: debris is uncommon, and you may need to mine a considerable amount of rock before finding a block.
Tunnels also expose you to lava, Ghasts, and open pockets of Nether terrain, so carry blocks you can use to wall off lava and keep a retreat route open.
Method 2: Explosion mining
The official Minecraft guide discusses explosion mining as a way to clear Nether rock quickly. Players detonate explosives such as TNT, or beds (which explode when used in the Nether), next to rock to break large areas at once. It is commonly described as quicker than tunneling, but it is also the most dangerous option. Explosions can deal heavy damage, start fires, and open walls next to lava.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
Use it only at full health, with a clear retreat path and a plan for where the blast will open the terrain.
Method 3: Bastion remnant chests
Bastion remnants are Nether structures whose chests can contain ancient debris in their loot. This route does not depend on finding debris in raw terrain, but you must locate a bastion, survive its hostile mobs, and open the right chests. Whether a given chest holds debris is random, so availability depends on which bastions you find and what they contain.

Method comparison
| Method | Risk | Preparation | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mining through Nether blocks | Moderate: lava, mobs, and open cavern exposure during tunneling | Diamond-tier pickaxe, food, light, and blocks for lava control | Depends on mining time; debris is found in generated terrain, averaging most often at Y=16 |
| Explosion mining | High: explosion damage, fire, and possible lava exposure | Explosives, full health, and a safe retreat plan | Clears large areas quickly; the sources do not state a find rate |
| Bastion remnant chests | High: hostile mobs and structure exploration | Ability to locate and travel to a bastion, plus a weapon and supplies | Depends on finding a bastion and random chest loot; not stated as a guaranteed source |
Mining requirement
Ancient debris requires a diamond-tier pickaxe or better. A stone or iron pickaxe will not break it. If you are collecting debris for netherite, smelt each piece in a furnace or blast furnace to produce netherite scrap, then combine four scrap with four gold ingots at a smithing table to make one netherite ingot.

This guidance applies to Minecraft Java Edition 1.19.3. Mojang’s official 1.19.3 release notes describe that release’s changes and do not list a change to ancient debris generation. Release notes are not a full specification of ore generation, however, so treat the Y=16 average as the best available guidance for that version rather than a guaranteed rule.
Best Value
If you play a later Java version, check that version’s notes before relying on these numbers. Bedrock Edition generates ores differently in some respects, so do not apply the Java altitude to Bedrock without checking Bedrock-specific guidance.
A practical search plan
- Enter the Nether through a portal you have already built.
- Press F3 and confirm your Y value.
- Tunnel horizontally near Y=16, checking each wall for debris.
- Carry a diamond-tier pickaxe and a light source.
- If you want faster progress and accept the risk, consider explosion mining at full health.
- If you find a bastion, check its chests for debris, but treat this as an added source rather than the plan.
The Bottom Line
In Minecraft Java Edition 1.19.3, search underground in the Nether around Y=16 with a diamond-tier pickaxe, and do not expect debris on open surfaces. Tunneling is the most straightforward route, while explosion mining and bastion chests are higher-risk alternatives.
