Petrified Root in WoW Midnight comes from three end-of-activity sources: caches after Prey completions, caches at the end of Delves, and final bosses in Heroic Midnight dungeons. None of them guarantees a root. The most detailed reported farming guidance is Method’s Midnight guide by Roguery, dated March 1, 2026. Its recommendations and yield figures come from its own observations, not from published Blizzard drop rates, so treat them as a starting point and confirm current behavior in-game.
The three reported sources
Prey completion caches
Completing Prey content can produce a cache that may contain Petrified Root. Method describes this drop as rare and says that higher Prey difficulty improves the chance. It does not publish a drop percentage, so there is no reliable way to calculate how many Prey completions a root will take. Method recommends running the highest difficulty you can handle, since that is the one lever it identifies.
Delve end caches
Delves also end in a cache that can hold the reagent. Method says a chance appears to begin at tier 4 or higher, and that tier 4 is the threshold it saw rather than a rule Blizzard has published. For higher tiers, Method points to Collegiate Calamity as a practical choice, because the NPC allies in that Delve help defeat bosses, which makes the run easier to finish at high levels.
Method’s tier 8 testing yielded between one and four roots. That range describes what its own runs produced. It is not a drop rate, and it should not be read as the number a typical run will return.
#1 Best Overall
Heroic Midnight dungeon final bosses
Heroic Midnight dungeons are the third route. The final boss can award one to four Petrified Root, and the drop is personal loot, so each eligible player can receive their own roots. Several players may get roots from the same run. Method does not provide a time-per-root comparison, so there is no evidence here that dungeons are faster or slower than Delves or Prey.
Route comparison
| Route | Reported reward | Practical direction | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prey completion | Rare drop from the completion cache | Run the highest difficulty you can clear (Method’s recommendation) | Random; no drop percentage stated (Method, March 1, 2026) |
| Delve end cache | Root drop from the end cache, with an apparent threshold at tier 4 | For higher tiers, consider Collegiate Calamity because NPC allies help with bosses | Not guaranteed; the 1–4 yield at tier 8 comes from Method’s own testing |
| Heroic Midnight dungeon | 1–4 roots from the final boss, as personal loot | Worth considering if Heroic dungeons already fit your schedule | Not guaranteed; no time-per-root data stated (Method, March 1, 2026) |
| Auction House or player trade | Direct purchase instead of a personal drop | Compare the listed price with the time you would spend farming | Prices change with the market; no price is given in this article |
Reconciling the exclusivity claim
Method’s article first says Petrified Root drops only from Prey and Delve content, then later lists Heroic Midnight dungeon final bosses as a source. The later section is the more specific one, so this article includes dungeons as a third route. If you see a guide that lists only Prey and Delves, it is likely repeating the earlier statement.

Buying or trading instead of farming
Petrified Root can be bought and sold on the in-game Auction House, and players can also trade it directly with each other. If you need only a few roots for a specific recipe, a purchase can be faster than repeated Prey, Delve, or dungeon runs. Prices depend on server and demand, so check the current listings before deciding.

What is and is not established
- Method describes Petrified Root as a sought-after Midnight profession reagent used in recipes that include gems, feasts, and enchants.
- No exact drop probability has been published for any of the three sources in the reviewed material.
- The tier 4 threshold and the tier 8 yield come from Method’s observations, not from an official Blizzard statement.
- Sources and loot behavior can change with patches, so the details above may not match your client if the game has been updated since March 2026.
Before you commit to a route
- Confirm you are on the current Midnight patch and check whether the reagent still drops from the activity you plan to run.
- Pick the route that matches your existing schedule. Prey, Delves, and dungeons all carry the same random outcome, so the best choice is usually the one you would run anyway.
- If you need roots on a deadline, compare a few Auction House listings with the expected time for a farming session before you start.
