Both are listed as locations with harvestable coal veins in a community wiki entry. If you need coal on an ongoing basis, you want a coal resource deposit rather than a vein: a deposit can be worked by an extractor you build on it, from a workshop you have claimed or a C.A.M.P. you control. Neither route has a published yield-per-minute figure or respawn timer, so the advice below sticks to what can be verified.
Hand-mining coal veins at Gauley Mine and The Burning Mine
Coal veins are mined directly in the world, which makes them the fastest option when you need unrefined coal right now. The community wiki lists veins at two mines in the Appalachian map:
- Gauley Mine. Coal veins are listed here. Use the mine as your starting point and look for the veins inside the mine itself.
- The Burning Mine. Also listed as a location with coal veins. Because it is a separate mine, plan a second trip if Gauley Mine’s veins are depleted or hard to reach for your character’s level.
The wiki does not give exact node coordinates or say which mine yields more coal, so treat the two locations as equivalent starting points until you have compared them yourself in game.
Coal veins versus coal deposits
These are two different opportunities, and they are easy to confuse on a map:

- Veins are finite mining nodes in the world. You walk up, mine them by hand, and move on.
- Deposits are map-marked resource sites that support repeat collection. You can mine them by hand, or build an extractor on the deposit so it produces resources while you are away.
If you only need a few units, veins are usually enough. If you are stocking a workshop or C.A.M.P. over several sessions, a deposit with an extractor is the more practical setup.
Comparing the three routes
| Approach | Where and how | Best for | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand-mine veins | Coal veins inside Gauley Mine or The Burning Mine (community wiki) | A direct trip when you need coal immediately | Exact node locations and per-vein yield not stated; the wiki does not compare the two mines |
| Work a deposit | Find a coal resource deposit on an interactive resource map, then mine it by hand or build an extractor on it | Repeat collection without depending on a mine run | Map listings were not checked against the live game; exact extractor output and build-radius rules not stated |
| Claim a public workshop | Take over a public workshop that has deposits, then build and mine there (Bethesda’s beginner guide, dated 10 June 2021) | Temporary access to a deposit plus building space | Ownership can be contested by other players, which triggers PvP inside the build area |
The choice comes down to two trade-offs: immediate hand-mining versus ongoing extractor output, and whether you are willing to hold a public workshop that other players can challenge. No sourced figure allows a numerical yield comparison between these routes.

Claiming a workshop for deposit access
Bethesda’s beginner guide describes public workshops as locations you can take over to build, craft and mine resource deposits outside your personal C.A.M.P.s. The same guide warns that other players may try to contest your ownership, which automatically starts player-versus-player combat inside the workshop’s build area.
Before you commit to a workshop, check these points:

- Bethesda Game Studios, the award-winning creators of Skyrim and Fallout 4, welcome you to Fallout 76, the online prequel where every surviving human is a real person. Work together, or not, to survive. Under the threat of nuclear annihilation, you’ll experience the largest, most dynamic world ever created in the legendary Fallout universe

- Confirm the workshop has a coal deposit you can actually reach. Claiming a workshop does not guarantee coal.
- Expect that a contested workshop can turn into a fight, so carry the gear and health you would bring into any PvP encounter.
- Leave the extractor and any stored materials in a state you can accept losing if the workshop changes hands.
Finding coal markers faster
Bethesda’s guidance is to tag the crafting component you need in the Pip-Boy. When you later encounter that component in the world, a magnifying-glass icon appears to mark it. Tag coal before a run if your current recipe or search needs it. Bethesda also notes that maps found in train stations and lookout towers reveal nearby points of interest, which can help you locate veins and deposits you have not visited.
Interactive resource maps can show vein and deposit markers, but the map listings for this topic were not confirmed against the live game. Use them to pick candidate locations, then verify the exact node in game before making a long trip, since online map data can lag behind game patches.

What the sources do not establish
Several things a farming guide usually promises are not supported by the evidence available for this article:
- A highest-yield coal location, or a ranking of Gauley Mine against The Burning Mine.
- A reliable yield-per-minute figure for hand-mining or for an extractor.
- A respawn timer or refresh schedule for veins or deposits.
Mining map pages also list item-yield ranges, but those figures could not be checked against the live page, so this article does not repeat them.

The most direct coal-location evidence here is a community wiki entry and interactive map listings. Bethesda’s guidance covers workshop mechanics and the Pip-Boy tagging feature, but it does not name coal-specific locations.
Coal is also a mid-tier crafting material that can be farmed from other sources, but no sourced comparison of those options appears in this article, so it is not covered here.
In practical terms: use the two mines as a reliable hand-mining starting point, use a deposit with an extractor if you want steady output, and claim a workshop only if you are prepared for other players to contest it.
The Bottom Line
Hand-mine coal veins at Gauley Mine or The Burning Mine for a quick supply. For steady collection, work a coal deposit with an extractor, and claim a public workshop only if you accept that other players can contest it.
