Pick the background that fits the character you want to role-play—not a supposedly optimal build. The six options named by Xbox Wire are Ex-Convict, Gambler, Lawbringer, Professor, Renegade, and Roustabout. Background can affect how the world perceives you and may open conversations or gameplay encounters; Traits and Skills have a more tangible effect on interaction.
What does your background do?
Your background represents your life before joining the Earth Directorate. Xbox Wire’s August 27, 2025 preview says it influences how the game world perceives your character and may lead to an expanded conversation or gameplay encounter. The preview does not provide a complete mechanics chart or say that any background is strongest.
For a practical build, put more weight on Traits and Skills. The preview describes those as having a more tangible effect on interaction, with examples including the Brawny, Lucky, and Suave traits and the Engineering, Hacking, and Lockpick skills. Read Xbox Wire’s preview.
How to choose among the six backgrounds

Choose by the character you want to play
If you want friction with the Directorate
Ex-Convict is the clearest fit in the preview: its example character joins Directorate service under a deal to clear their record. Treat that as a role-playing premise, not a guarantee of a particular plot outcome.

If you want a Directorate loyalist
Lawbringer is the option the preview directly associates with devotion to the Earth Directorate.
If you care most about combat, stealth, or utility
Do not assume the background sets your build’s strength. The official preview points to Traits and Skills as the more tangible influence on interaction. Its examples of QA builds pair backgrounds with varied traits and skills, but they are inspiration rather than head-to-head tests of the backgrounds. Xbox Wire’s October QA build examples and November QA build examples show combinations, not proof of an objectively best background.
