For modern Minecraft Java, Sodium is the clearest performance-first place to start. If you prefer an all-in-one client, try Lunar’s Sodium module. Badlion has published higher FPS figures than Lunar in its own tests, but those historical, vendor-run results do not establish a universal winner. Your Minecraft version, hardware, graphics settings, and play environment all affect the result.
Which client should you choose?

There is no established current independent head-to-head result that identifies the fastest client across Lunar, Badlion, Feather, and a custom Sodium setup on matched hardware. The winner for your system is unresolved until you compare them under the same conditions.
Why FPS results differ
FPS depends on more than the client. Lunar’s support guide notes that computer specifications, background applications, and settings all affect performance. On a system with both integrated and dedicated graphics, Minecraft may also be using the wrong GPU; check that it is assigned to the dedicated one if that applies to your setup.
- Game version and loader: Compatibility varies by release. Sodium’s Modrinth listing covers Java 1.16.3–1.21.x and 26.x, with Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt support; verify the listing for your exact version before installing.
- Hardware and drivers: GPU selection, driver support, and the specific hardware/software combination can change the result. Sodium cautions that observed performance varies with configuration.
- Settings and workload: A busy server, populated lobby, or demanding settings can produce different results from a quiet world with lighter settings.
- Average FPS versus smoothness: A high average does not necessarily mean fewer stutters. Sodium describes micro-stutter reduction as a goal, so consider frame-time consistency as well as the displayed FPS.
What Badlion’s FPS comparison actually found
Badlion published two comparisons, both approximately from 2022. In a lobby comparison, Badlion reported averages of 216 FPS for Badlion Client Lite and 124 FPS for Lunar. In a separate test across three Hypixel Bedwars games, it reported 480 FPS for Badlion Lite, 398 for Lunar, and 290 for vanilla Minecraft.

Badlion said its Bedwars comparison used the same map, settings, computer, and playstyle, alternated clients to reduce confounding, and measured results with FrameView. That makes the figures useful as context for Badlion’s own test—not a guaranteed gain, a current independent benchmark, or proof that Badlion will be fastest on another PC. Read Badlion’s comparison.
How to make a fair comparison
- Check compatibility first. Confirm that each client or Sodium installation supports the same Minecraft version. For Sodium, also confirm the loader listed for that release on the project page.
- Keep the setup consistent. Use the same computer, Minecraft version, graphics settings, resolution, server or scene, and play pattern for each client. Avoid comparing a crowded lobby in one client with a quiet world in another.
- Compare more than a brief peak. Play long enough to observe average FPS and stutters in the same kind of activity. Record results separately rather than treating smoothness and average FPS as interchangeable.
- Repeat the comparison. Background activity and changing scenes can affect results. Close unnecessary programs and use the same measurement method each time.
What to check if FPS is unexpectedly low
- On a dual-GPU computer, confirm that Minecraft is running on the dedicated GPU.
- Update graphics drivers and close background applications that are using system resources.
- Reduce performance-heavy graphics settings, then compare again in the same scene.
- Use settings guidance for your exact Minecraft version. Lunar’s support guide provides version-specific OptiFine and Sodium recommendations; Sodium also advises relying on its supported defaults and changing advanced performance settings when needed rather than assuming every option should be adjusted.

Treat Badlion’s published advantage over Lunar as a result of Badlion’s own historical tests. To find the fastest option for your PC, compare compatible clients on that same machine under matched conditions.
