No class in Brighter Shores is established as the best. The three options, Cryoknight, Guardian and Hammermage, are called legendary classes on the official Brighter Shores site and factions in most guides. Choose the one whose look, elemental theme and crafting profession you most want to spend time with. The official material and third-party guides available as of this writing do not support a universal best pick.
What each option is
The table below uses the element, gear and crafting links described in Icy Veins’ Brighter Shores beginner guide, which is dated December 2024. The class names and terminology come from the official site.
| Option | Element and identity | Signature gear | Linked crafting profession | Suits a player who likes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cryoknight | Cryonae (ice) | Metal armor and weapons | Blacksmithing | A knightly look and metal weapon crafting |
| Guardian | Arborae (nature) | Bone-and-wood equipment | Bonewright | Nature themes and bone or wood crafting |
| Hammermage | Tempestae (storm) | Stone armor and weapons | Stonemason | A storm theme, stone gear and hammers |
Icy Veins describes Guardian as having ranged options. That is guide commentary, and the reviewed sources do not establish a current combat role that sets Guardian apart from the other two.
Why there is no universal best class
- No official ranking. The sources reviewed contain no official performance ranking, win rate or pick rate for any faction. Community claims about which class is most popular or strongest are not measured data.
- Balance is described as slight. Icy Veins says the differences between factions are small and that the choice comes down to preference. This is the guide’s own assessment, not an official statement.
- Elemental charts are dated. The Escapist published an elemental counter chart in November 2024. It predates later combat changes, so treat it as historical guidance and check current in-game information before relying on it.
What changed in combat
On March 6, 2025, developer Fen Research released a combat rework. It merged the Guard, Scout, Minefighter and Watchperson professions into a single global combat profession. Combat gear no longer needs episode-specific tuning, and weapons and armor carry across episodes. The update also added combat capes that reflect your faction’s appearance.

The official Project Milestone Phase 2 update lists faction-linked shield materials. This is one of the few concrete differences between factions that official material confirms:

How to decide
- Start with the look. Decide whether a metal knight, a nature-aligned Guardian or a stone-and-storm Hammermage fits the character you want to play.
- Check the crafting profession. Blacksmithing for Cryoknight, Bonewright for Guardian and Stonemason for Hammermage are the crafting paths linked to each faction. Choose the one you would enjoy leveling.
- Look at the shield materials. If you plan to craft or trade shields, note the faction-specific materials listed above.
- Ignore claims of a strongest class. Unless a current, comparative source with measured results appears, treat any claim that one faction is best as opinion.
The free content on the official site is enough to try the game before you commit to a faction, so the decision does not need to be final on day one.
