No single dragon was the best pick in School of Dragons for every player. The right choice depended on what you wanted to do with it: race, battle, or simply keep a dragon you liked. The official online game closed on June 30, 2023, so this is a guide to how the choice worked in the original game, not advice for a live service.
Choose by the activity you cared about
The original game separated dragon performance into racing and combat attributes, and the two did not always line up. A dragon that looked strong on paper for one activity could be a weak choice for the other, so the most useful question was not “which dragon is best?” but “best at what?”
Community wiki documentation of the game also warned that displayed stats did not always match how dragons performed in practice. Treat the numbers as a starting point for comparison rather than a guarantee of results.
The game is no longer playable
The official servers closed on June 30, 2023. The shutdown notice, reproduced by a third-party listing and attributed to the School of Dragons team, stated that the game would no longer be playable after that date. Unofficial projects or emulators that claim to recreate the game are not the original official service, and this guide does not treat them as authorized continuations.

- Primary starter: The New Student sequence gave every player a primary starter dragon as part of the early game.
- Secondary starter: A later sequence randomly assigned one of four dragons: Flightmare, Rumblehorn, Sand Wraith, or Shockjaw. Players did not freely pick this one.
This matters for the decision. If your early dragon was a random roll, the best option for your play style may have been a dragon you obtained later from the store rather than the one you started with.
What the dragon store showed you
The historical dragon store grouped species by class. Each listing displayed skills and elements, along with combat and racing attributes. Community documentation states that most eggs were purchased with gems, the game’s premium currency. The source does not establish specific gem prices, so this guide does not list them.

If racing mattered most
Start with the racing attributes in the store listing and compare dragons within that family. Then test the dragon in your own races, because the displayed numbers did not always translate into finishing position.

If battles mattered most
Compare combat attributes alongside skills and elements, and decide which battle style you used. A dragon suited to one tactic could be a poor fit for another, so match the choice to how you actually fought.
If you wanted a favorite companion
Personal preference is a legitimate reason to choose a dragon. No sources establish a universal winner across all activities, so pick the dragon you enjoyed looking at and playing with, and use the stat families only if you want a secondary tiebreaker.
