Season 2 of Fallout shows at least some members of the Kings, the Elvis-inspired Freeside faction from Fallout: New Vegas, as feral ghouls. That is a major break from the game. The creators have not stated a specific in-story cause for the change. What they have explained is how the series relates to New Vegas canon: it is set after the games and is designed to leave room for players’ different endings.
What changes for the Kings
In Fallout: New Vegas, the Kings are an Elvis-inspired faction associated with Freeside and personal liberty. In Season 2, at least some of them appear as feral ghouls, which makes their on-screen fate one of the most visible differences between the show and the game.
The detail that not every King turned feral comes from a qualification attributed to executive producer Jonathan Nolan. It reaches readers secondhand, through a reference summary of an IGN interview, rather than through a full transcript. Treat it as a reported qualification, not a count of survivors. It does not establish that the faction was wiped out, that every King is feral, or that any single game ending is the one the show follows.
The timeline: 15 years after the game
Co-showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet said in 2025 interview coverage that Season 2 is set 15 years after the events of New Vegas. That gap is the only specific timeline figure in the available reporting, and it is the most useful anchor for understanding why the Mojave looks different. She described the aim this way:

How the show handles competing New Vegas endings
The creators’ approach to canon is the clearest documented part of the story. Robertson-Dworet said the series tried to honor the possible endings of the game and avoid contradicting individual players’ choices.
Nolan described the idea that shapes the setting. He said: “We had the delicious idea that at the end of a conflict, 15 years down the line, every faction might think they won, which I think has a bit of a poetic quality to it.” In other words, the show treats the post-war Mojave as a place where several factions can hold competing beliefs about who prevailed.
Rank #2
- Beyond the Wasteland: The world of New Vegas is more expansive than ever. Each new distinct area presents a fresh set of branching-quests, remarkable personalities and more chances to play the Savior or the Pariah to the natives of New Vegas.
- Dead Money: Lured into a trap masquerading as the Sierra Madre Casino, you are thrown into a high stakes game where you'll have to work with three other lost souls if you want to survive.
- Honest Hearts: An expedition into Utah's Zion National Park goes horribly wrong and you become embroiled in a war between tribes and put into a conflict between a New Canaanite missionary and the mysterious Burning Man.
- Old World Blues: Transported to the Big MT research crater, you are enlisted by the Think Tank to save them from their own science experiments that have gone horribly out of control.
- Lonesome Road: Ulysses, the original Courier Six, contacts you and promises to answer why he refused to deliver the Platinum Chip at the start of Fallout: New Vegas, but only if you make one last journey into the treacherous canyons of the Divide.
Robertson-Dworet said the goal was to honor players’ experiences and to avoid making one game ending the only outcome that leads into the show. Taken together, these statements mean the creators did not name a single canonical New Vegas ending as the lead-in to Season 2.
Nolan also framed the broader problem of working with existing material around one question: “What existed before, and how do you remain respectful to it?”

The creators’ approach explains why the show can depict a changed Mojave without adopting a single game-ending slide as settled history. It does not explain what happened to the Kings. Based on the available reporting:
- No creator-confirmed, specific cause for the Kings’ transformation has been published.
- No complete count of surviving Kings is available.
- The creators have not said that any particular player ending is definitively canon.
Readers who want the Kings’ backstory should treat the show’s depiction as an open development rather than a settled explanation.

Why the story moved to New Vegas
Nolan said each Fallout installment is shaped by its location. Bringing the show to the Mojave made Los Angeles a practical production fit and a workable storytelling fit at the same time.
Robertson-Dworet said the team was drawn to New Vegas because they loved the game, and because Lucy’s journey toward the “City of Sin” works as a metaphor for her effort to hold on to her moral core. This is context for the setting choice. It is not an explanation of the Kings’ transformation.
