Which pistol suits PvE?
Use the Volcanic for measured shots
The Volcanic’s reported strength is the impact of an individual shot, with accuracy as part of its appeal. That can suit players who take time to aim and want each shot to count. Its slower firing pace is a real cost when several enemies need attention quickly.
Use a Mauser or Semi-Automatic for quick follow-ups
Rapid fire can be more convenient when you need to engage multiple threats or correct a missed shot without waiting as long between shots. Between these two, the reported distinction is capacity for the Mauser versus quicker reloads for the Semi-Automatic. A community discussion is useful context, but it is anecdotal rather than a definitive current test: “Semi auto or volcanic pistol”.
Which pistol suits PvP?
Do not treat any of the three as a guaranteed PvP winner. A rapid-fire pistol is useful only when its shots connect; a more deliberate weapon may suit someone who lands accurate, high-impact shots. Your aim, combat situation, weapon familiarity, and upkeep all affect how a sidearm feels. Rockstar’s official combat and ability-card guidance discusses adapting combat to a preferred play style, but does not establish a current pistol-specific PvP meta.

Why exact stat claims need caution
Published weapon comparisons and player discussions do not provide a verified, current official numerical ranking of these pistols in Red Dead Online. Some online stat claims may mix Story Mode with Online or reflect older balance states. Rockstar’s historical Showdown Mode update names the Volcanic as an example weapon in an online mode loadout; that confirms its place in the game, not superiority over the Mauser or Semi-Automatic.
For a precise comparison, check the weapon display in your current game with the ammunition and weapon condition you plan to use. Do not assume figures from an older guide describe your current Online setup.

Familiarity and maintenance can change the feel
Rockstar’s December 2018 combat guidance says repeated use builds familiarity, improving reload speed, aiming stability, and recoil control. It also says neglected weapons perform worse, with lower firing rate and damage and slower reloads. Keep your chosen sidearm maintained and practice with it before deciding that its handling does not suit you.
Ability cards let players adapt combat to their preferred approach, according to the same Rockstar guidance. A community source also suggests a Gunslinger’s Choice interaction may favor the Semi-Automatic, but that specific present-day interaction is not authoritatively confirmed here; treat it as a player-reported build tip, not a settled reason to choose the weapon.

Make the choice by testing your own priorities
- Decide whether you value impact and deliberate accuracy, or a faster sequence of shots.
- If rapid fire matters most, compare the Mauser and Semi-Automatic by whether reported capacity or reload speed better fits your encounters.
- Inspect the in-game weapon display with your intended ammunition, and keep the weapon in good condition.
- Use the sidearm long enough to build familiarity, then judge it by how reliably you land shots in the situations you actually play.
