If you are new to Final Fantasy Tactics or tactics RPGs in general, start with FINAL FANTASY TACTICS – The Ivalice Chronicles in its Enhanced version. Square Enix positions Enhanced as the entry point for newcomers, and it adds updated graphics, a revised interface, fully voiced dialogue, extra dialogue, quality-of-life features, and a gentler Squire difficulty. If you want to play the game as it was first released in 1997, choose Classic, which is included in the same release. Both versions use the War of the Lions translation only in Classic; the rest of this guide explains the differences and who should pick which.
Enhanced or Classic: what actually differs
The Ivalice Chronicles bundles both presentations into one purchase, so the choice is about how you want the game to look, sound and feel rather than which product to buy. Square Enix’s launch and feature announcements describe the differences below. Where a row says “not described”, the publisher’s announcements do not address that point, so treat it as unconfirmed rather than absent.

Which version fits you
New to tactics RPGs
Choose Enhanced. Its difficulty selection, fast-forward, autosave and turn-order tools reduce the friction that makes tactics games hard to start. Its interface and voiced dialogue also make the political story easier to follow if you have not played a game of this style before.

Want the original presentation
Choose Classic. Square Enix describes it as faithful to the graphics and gameplay of the 1997 original, paired with the War of the Lions translation. Marketing Director Francis Santos put it this way in the PlayStation Blog announcement of June 4, 2025: “Those who wish to enjoy Final Fantasy Tactics as they remember it are welcome to play the classic version, which unites the graphics and gameplay of the original 1997 version with the renowned War of the Lions translation for a unique way to experience this beloved title.” The PlayStation Blog post is the primary source for that statement.
Returning to the original release
Classic is the most direct way to revisit the 1997 game without tracking down old hardware. If you want to compare the two versions side by side, you can switch between them within The Ivalice Chronicles, so you do not need to buy them separately. Earlier standalone releases, including the original PlayStation disc and the PSP, iOS and Android editions, differ in ways this guide does not cover. Check their current availability before buying one of them.

What kind of game you are buying
Final Fantasy Tactics is a turn-based tactical RPG. Battles take place on 3D terrain, and position, turn order and character customization all matter. The job system lets characters learn abilities and keep using them after changing jobs. Square Enix’s June 2025 announcement cites more than 20 jobs and over 300 character abilities. Nintendo’s Switch listing uses the softer phrasing “over 20 jobs” and “hundreds of abilities”, so the exact 300 figure should be attributed to Square Enix.
The story is set in the kingdom of Ivalice and follows Ramza Beoulve and his childhood companion Delita as the kingdom faces a succession struggle and war. If you prefer tight tactical puzzles over a long political drama, this is still the core of the game, so it is worth knowing before you start.

The Ivalice Chronicles launched on September 30, 2025 for the following platforms:

Nintendo’s US Switch listing marks the game as single-player, lists American English among the supported languages, and names Square Enix as publisher. Platform listings, physical availability and language support can differ by region, so check your local store before you buy. The game is now about a year old, so pricing and stock may have changed since launch.

Quick checklist before you buy
- Confirm your platform appears in the store listing you are looking at.
- Check that the listing’s language support includes your language.
- If you want the original 1997 look, plan to select Classic in the game before you start.
- If you are new to the genre, start on Enhanced and use the difficulty selection if early battles feel punishing.
If you are unsure, start with Enhanced. You can always try Classic afterwards to see how the original game feels.
