Official Lodestone guides explain how the choice is made and describe each company’s PvP role, but they do not show that one company is better for ordinary progression. For most players, setting and aesthetic are the deciding factors.
How the choice is made
You do not pick a Grand Company from a menu. The decision is tied to the main scenario quest line at level 20, and the quest you accept sets your affiliation. The official FINAL FANTASY XIV UI guide puts it plainly: “The quest you accept will determine which of the three Grand Companies you join.” (FINAL FANTASY XIV Lodestone UI Guide)
- Level your character to 20 and continue the main scenario quests.
- When the Grand Company quests become available, note the three options: one each for the Twin Adder, Maelstrom, and Immortal Flames.
- Accept the quest for the company you want. Accepting it is what makes you a member of that company.
Choosing between the three companies
Each company is tied to one of the three city-states that form the alliance in the official setting overview. The table below lists the home city and the reader profile each one suits.
| Grand Company | Home city-state | Pick it if you want |
|---|---|---|
| Twin Adder | Gridania | To align with Gridania and its story and setting |
| Maelstrom | Limsa Lominsa | To align with Limsa Lominsa and its story and setting |
| Immortal Flames | Ul’dah | To align with Ul’dah and its story and setting |
If none of the three city-states draws you in, pick the company whose visual identity you like best. Do not expect the choice to change how hard the game is or how quickly you progress.

What the official guides do not establish
The official pages do not provide a current comparison of ordinary PvE rewards, quartermaster inventory, or the requirements for changing allegiance outside PvP. They also do not establish that one company is objectively superior for general progression. Treat any claim that the three companies are mechanically identical as unverified, and check the in-game quartermaster and the current official guides if a particular reward or item matters to you.
Membership and mounts
The official UI guide links Grand Company membership and acquiring a personal chocobo to unlocking mount use. If mounts are a priority, joining a company is part of that path, so make the company decision with that in mind. The same guide’s chocobo page is the primary reference for the exact steps.

Your company choice matters more for PvP, because it affects which team you fight for and how your progress is recorded.
Frontline teams
Frontline has three teams, each representing one of the three Grand Companies. (Lodestone Frontline guide)
PvP rank, EXP, and AP follow your allegiance
According to the official Crystalline Conflict guide, PvP rank, PvP EXP, and AP are recognized only by the company through which they were earned. If you transfer allegiance, you start over for that company, and the guide says those records are reinstated when you rejoin your former company. (Lodestone Crystalline Conflict guide) The guide does not spell out the transfer steps in detail, and the effect may vary by mode, so confirm the current rules before switching.
