Nintendo’s developer material explicitly confirms marriage systems in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, Fire Emblem Awakening, and Fire Emblem Fates. Fire Emblem Engage has relationship features called Support and Bond conversations, but the developer interviews covered here do not confirm that it uses the same marriage system. Nintendo’s published material does not yet settle whether Fire Emblem Three Houses or the other entries have romance, so treat any complete series list with caution.
Where marriage is explicitly confirmed
Genealogy of the Holy War
In Nintendo’s developer interview for this game, marriage is described as a system in which characters fall in love and have children. The parents’ relationship shapes the children’s abilities, and those children appear as support units. Nintendo’s developers later cited Genealogy of the Holy War as one of the earlier entries with this kind of system, in which characters marry and their children inherit parental abilities.

Fire Emblem Awakening
Awakening brought marriage back as a central feature. In Nintendo’s Iwata Asks: Fire Emblem: Awakening, developer Yamagami said the marriage system was what left the greatest impression on him in the series. The developers say they aimed to increase the number of possible marriage variations and pairings, including pairings with characters in the player’s own unit. Maeda put it plainly in the same feature: “You can marry any of your comrades.” The interview does not separate avatar pairings from other unit members.
Fire Emblem Fates
Fates offers the most direct form of romance among the three. In Iwata Asks: Fire Emblem Fates, Maeda said, “The player’s avatar can marry all people in their unit.” Choosing a spouse can affect the class options available to the avatar. Nintendo’s feature on the Birthright and Conquest routes adds that several characters other than the avatar can marry and have children, and that many characters can form S-rank relationships, which can lead to marriage and children.

Engage: bonds, not confirmed marriage
Engage is the entry most often mistaken for a romance game because its relationship features are prominent. Developer Tei, in Nintendo’s Ask the Developer Vol. 8, Fire Emblem Engage — Part 3, described the design this way: “For this game, on top of Support conversations, there are also Bond conversations that occur between Emblems and characters.” Support conversations take place between characters, and Bond conversations link the Emblems to characters. Deepening these bonds can unlock skills and weapon proficiencies.
The Engage developers did discuss the marriage systems of Genealogy of the Holy War, Awakening, and Fates during development. The interviews covered here, however, do not establish that Engage has a marriage system of its own. Until a title-specific official source says otherwise, Support and Bond should be read as relationship mechanics with gameplay rewards, not as marriage.

Three Houses and the remaining entries
Nintendo’s official series history confirms that Three Houses is a mainline entry, and Nintendo’s support documentation covers its updates and some of its support-related features. Neither source establishes whether Three Houses has romance or romantic endings, or how those systems work. The same gap applies to the other entries, none of which are discussed in the developer interviews on marriage. Those titles remain unconfirmed here, and the word “support” in a game’s documentation should not be taken as proof of romance.

How to check whether a specific entry has romance
Because the official sources do not cover every title, use the same questions for any game you are checking:

- Does an official source use the word marriage, or only describe Support or bond conversations?
- Can the player choose the partner, or does the game assign pairings?
- Can the player’s avatar marry, or is romance limited to other characters?
- Do pairings produce children, inherited abilities, class changes, or combat effects?
- Does the relationship outcome happen during the story, or only in an ending?
Answering these questions for Genealogy of the Holy War, Awakening, and Fates produces clear answers. For Engage and Three Houses, the same questions currently have no confirmed answers in Nintendo’s published material.
