Which Game Is Better, Skyrim or Oblivion Remastered?

Neither game is objectively better. Skyrim suits players who want dual-wielding, crafting and three official add-ons; Oblivion Remastered suits those who want Cyrodiil, its quest identity and an updated 2006 original.

Neither game is objectively better. Skyrim fits players who want a densely populated northern province, two-handed item use, deep crafting and three official expansions. Oblivion Remastered fits players who want to explore Cyrodiil, prefer its quest and story identity, or want the 2006 original with substantially updated visuals and quality-of-life changes. Which one is “better” depends on the feel you want, and it also depends on which edition and platform you are comparing, because both titles come in several forms.

Pin down the edition and platform first

“Skyrim” is not one product. Bethesda’s Skyrim overview covers the base game and its three official add-ons, Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn, but the bundles and platform releases vary. Oblivion Remastered is also sold across several platforms, and its bonus content depends on the edition you buy. If you are weighing a specific listing, check which expansions it includes before deciding, because that single detail can change the value of the comparison.

Setting and exploration

Bethesda describes Cyrodiil as a land of forests, pastures and coastlines. Skyrim is set in a harsher northern province of mountain peaks and snow. Bethesda also says Skyrim is technically smaller than Cyrodiil but packs in enough discoveries that it feels larger. That is the publisher’s own framing, not an independent measurement of world size, so treat it as a description of design intent.

In practice, the choice comes down to landscape. If you enjoy a dense spread of towns, ruins, caves and points of interest in a cold, rugged setting, Skyrim’s design is built around that. If you want the greener, more pastoral Cyrodiil and its coastlines, Oblivion Remastered is the way to see it.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim The Adventure Game - Epic Cooperative & Solo Board Game, Open-World Questing, Character Progression & Narrative Strategy, Ages 14+, 1-4 Players, 60-120 Min Playtime
  • ENTER THE WORLD OF SKYRIM: Experience the legendary open-world RPG as a tabletop adventure, exploring Tamriel through branching quests, iconic factions, and rich Elder Scrolls lore.
  • COOPERATIVE OR SOLO PLAY: Designed for 1–4 players, allowing you to adventure solo or team up to face dragons, uncover conspiracies, and shape the fate of Skyrim together.
  • OPEN-ENDED QUEST SYSTEM: Choose how you approach each mission—diplomacy, stealth, or combat—as your decisions permanently impact the story and the world around you.
  • DEEP CHARACTER PROGRESSION: Build unique heroes with evolving skills, gear, and abilities inspired by the video game’s iconic progression systems.
  • HIGH REPLAYABILITY: Modular scenarios, multiple quest paths, and varied character builds ensure every campaign feels fresh and every journey through Skyrim is different.

Combat and crafting

Bethesda highlights Skyrim’s ability to hold different items in each hand and its crafting system, which covers armor, weapons, jewelry, potions and food. Oblivion Remastered adds sprinting and recreates the original’s combat animations, effects, sound and hit reactions. These features point to different preferences rather than a clear winner. If you want to mix a weapon and a spell or dual-wield, Skyrim’s systems are the stronger draw. If you want the combat rhythm of the 2006 game, with its updated presentation, Oblivion Remastered is the closer match.

Progression and presentation

Oblivion Remastered keeps the original’s recognizable experience while updating visuals with Unreal Engine 5, new character models and lip sync, a third-person perspective, a revised UI and UX, and new dialogue. Its leveling system was redesigned with inspiration from both Oblivion and Skyrim, so it is neither a straight copy of the 2006 system nor of Skyrim’s. Players who are comfortable with the older game’s structure will find the remaster familiar, while players coming from Skyrim will notice how the leveling has been adapted.

Expansion content

Expansion content is one of the most concrete differences between the two releases. The table below uses Bethesda’s listings.

Title Official expansion content listed by Bethesda
Skyrim Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn (three official add-ons in Bethesda’s Skyrim overview)
Oblivion Remastered (Standard Edition) Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine story expansions, plus additional DLC

The table shows what each release’s listings name, not a judgment about how good each expansion is. Bethesda’s listings for the Oblivion Remastered Nintendo Switch 2 Deluxe Edition add further items, including the physical cartridge and digital Akatosh and Mehrunes Dagon armor, weapon and horse-armor sets. The bonus content differs between the standard and digital Deluxe editions, so compare the exact listing you plan to buy.

Which one to choose

Choose Skyrim if

  • You want a dense, populated northern province with mountains and snow.
  • Dual-wielding and mixing items in both hands are central to how you want to fight.
  • Crafting armor, weapons, jewelry, potions and food is a major draw.
  • You want the three official add-ons: Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn.

Choose Oblivion Remastered if

  • You want to see Cyrodiil’s forests, pastures and coastlines.
  • You prefer the story and quest identity of the 2006 game.
  • You want updated visuals, a third-person perspective, revised UI and sprinting, while keeping the original’s feel.
  • You want the Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine story expansions.

Play-first guidance

Players who have never played either game often start with the one that matches the setting they find more appealing. Players who know Oblivion and want to revisit it will find the remaster the natural choice, while players who enjoyed a more modern open-world feel will often find Skyrim more immediately familiar. These are preference-based patterns, not findings from a survey.

Figures worth knowing, and what they do not show

Bethesda’s Skyrim overview cites a 2014 press release reporting that Skyrim had sold over 20 million copies. That is a historical publisher-reported figure, not a current sales total. No comparable sales figure for Oblivion Remastered was established in the material reviewed, so the two cannot be ranked on sales.

Virtuos Executive Producer Alex Murphy said, “Oblivion is the heart and soul of the Remaster.” The quote appears in Bethesda’s April 22, 2025 feature overview, and it reflects the developer’s intent for the remaster rather than an independent assessment of quality.

The comparison here does not cover comparative technical benchmarks, performance, stability, mod-library size, writing quality or quest quality. Those factors may matter to you, but no reliable source-based ranking exists for them in the evidence reviewed. The most defensible choice is the one that matches the setting, combat style and story you want.
