Neither male nor female V is the better choice in Cyberpunk 2077. The right pick depends on which romance you want and how you want to play V. The main practical difference is romance eligibility: some companions require a specific V body type, and one requires a specific voice. No cited source establishes a combat or build advantage for either version.
Which romances depend on V’s gender
Per Push Square’s romance guide by Robert Ramsey (June 4, 2025), the documented requirements for the main romance options are below. PC Gamer’s romance guide gives the same broad distinctions as a cross-check.

Body type and voice are chosen separately during character creation, so the two settings can be mismatched. That matters for Judy and Kerry, because each requires both a body type and a voice to line up. A female-body V with a masculine voice, for example, does not meet Judy’s requirements, and a male-body V with a feminine voice does not meet Kerry’s.
Is one version stronger in combat or builds?
No. The official announcement from CD PROJEKT RED (June 12, 2018) describes Cyberpunk 2077 as an open-world, narrative-driven role-playing game in which players create V and choices carry consequences. It does not compare male and female V mechanically. The guides cited here do not describe a combat-stat or build advantage tied to gender either. That is a limit of what these sources cover, not a full audit of every patch or edge case.

What else decides romance
V’s body and voice are only part of the picture. Push Square’s guide notes that quest choices also matter for starting these relationships. GameSpot’s report from August 30, 2019 quotes lead quest designer Paweł Sasko saying that the sexual orientation of a given NPC also plays a role in such interactions. He also explained that NPCs have their own goals and that player decisions can affect romantic interest.
That 2019 interview predates the game’s December 2020 release, so treat it as a description of design intent. For current requirements, check the latest guide and your game version.

How to choose
Start with the companion, not the gender.
- You want Judy: create a female-body V with a feminine voice.
- You want Kerry: create a male-body V with a masculine voice.
- You want Panam: create a male-body V. The cited guides list only the body type for her.
- You want River: create a female-body V. The cited guides list only the body type for her.
- You have no romance in mind: pick the body and voice that suit your roleplay. Nothing in the cited sources makes one version the stronger choice.
Voice performance and characterisation are a matter of taste. The sources do not establish that one voice or one version’s dialogue is objectively better.
Replaying as the other gender
A second playthrough can open a different romance route, which is a concrete reason to replay. The cited sources do not measure how different the overall story feels between versions, so do not expect the main plot to change substantially on the strength of this information alone.

- The romance requirements come from a June 2025 guide and a secondary cross-check. Later patches or updates could change them.
- The official 2018 announcement describes the game in general terms and gives no gender-specific figures.
