The merchant with the highest listed gold limit in the community roster is Orrin at Anvil Castle, at 1,200 gold per transaction. But the merchant with the highest limit is not automatically the one that pays you the most. In the original 2006 Oblivion, the price you get depends on your Mercantile skill, the merchant’s Mercantile skill, the merchant’s disposition toward you, and the barter setting. Gold limits and sale prices are two separate questions, and this guide treats them that way.
What “most gold” actually means
A merchant’s gold figure is a cap on how much they can pay in a single transaction. It is not a cash reserve that drains as you sell to them. The community merchant roster on the Elder Scrolls Wiki (Fandom) notes that a merchant can be sold to repeatedly, so one large sale does not lock out the next. Treat the roster figures as reference values for the original game. They are not an official, all-versions ranking.
Listed gold limits in the original game
These are the transaction limits listed for the three merchants the roster gives as examples. Each figure is a community-maintained listing for the original game, so verify it in your own save if a sale is blocked.
| Merchant | Shop or context | Listed transaction gold limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orrin | Anvil Castle | 1,200 gold | Also one of the named fences for stolen goods (Bethesda Support) |
| Seed-Neeus | Northern Goods and Trade | 800 gold | Limit as listed on the Elder Scrolls Wiki (Fandom) roster |
| Ongar the World-Weary | Bruma (named as a fence location) | 600 gold | Also one of the named fences for stolen goods (Bethesda Support) |
Orrin’s 1,200-gold limit is the largest of the three, but the roster does not rank every merchant in the game, so Orrin should not be read as the single richest vendor overall.

Why a high limit does not guarantee a good price
The gold limit controls how much a merchant can pay out. The offer you actually receive is set by barter. Three factors drive that offer:
- Your Mercantile skill against the merchant’s. A player with a low Mercantile skill selling to a merchant with a high one usually gets a weaker offer, because the skill gap is what the barter calculation rewards.
- Disposition. A merchant who likes you offers better terms. Raising disposition is the most direct way to improve a sale price in the original game.
- The barter slider. The barter setting in the trade window moves the offer. Setting it as favorably as you can is the last lever before you accept or walk away.
The practical consequence is that a 600-gold merchant you can bargain with well may pay you more per item than a 1,200-gold merchant who is cold toward you.

How Mercantile rank changes which vendors you can use
The original PC manual lays out three Mercantile milestones. They affect what you can sell and how much gold merchants can hold for you. The manual separates these gold effects from the price bargaining itself, so the two should be considered together.
Journeyman
At Journeyman, you can buy and sell any object to any vendor. Before this point, shop specialties limit which items a merchant will accept, so reaching Journeyman removes that restriction.
Rank #3
- Includes Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine expansions
Expert
At Expert, you can invest in a shop to permanently add 500 gold to its available gold. This raises the merchant’s cap for every later sale to that shop, which makes a shop you already use more useful as a dumping ground for expensive loot.
Master
At Master, all shops receive 500 more gold for barter. The bonus applies across the board rather than to one merchant, so it matters most when you are selling high-value items to several vendors.

Selling stolen goods
Ordinary merchants generally will not take stolen items. Bethesda Support says you must join the Thieves Guild before you can fence stolen goods. The named fences in its guidance are:
- Dar Jee in Leyawiin
- Fathis Ules in the Imperial City or Chorrol
- Luciana Galena in Bravil
- Ongar the World-Weary in Bruma
- Orrin in Anvil
If you hold stolen loot without Thieves Guild membership, the fence route is closed until you join.

Remastered: what is and is not established
Bethesda describes The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered as a modernized version of the 2006 game. Its official Remastered information does not publish vendor-specific gold limits, so the figures above should not be assumed to carry over unchanged. The Mercantile rules and fence requirements described here come from the original game’s manual and Bethesda Support, and the same checks apply on Remastered: confirm the gold limit and barter behavior in your own game before planning a large sale.
A practical selling routine
- Check your Mercantile rank. If you are below Journeyman, confirm the shop accepts the item type before you carry it there.
- Pick a merchant with a high listed gold limit, such as Orrin at Anvil Castle, if you have a large single sale.
- Raise that merchant’s disposition before bargaining. A friendlier merchant gives a better offer.
- Set the barter slider as favorably as you can, then compare the offer with the price at another merchant.
- If the item is stolen, route it to a named fence and make sure you have Thieves Guild membership first.
- Once you reach Expert, invest in the shops you use most. Once you reach Master, the 500-gold bonus applies to every shop.
No single merchant is the best choice for every player. The right vendor depends on your Mercantile rank, the merchant’s disposition, and whether the item is stolen.
