Use the Steam download region where you are, or the closest region available. If downloads remain slow, test nearby regions one at a time: Steam does not publish a universal fastest-region ranking, and performance can change when content servers are slow, overloaded, or having a hardware failure.
How to choose a Steam download region
Steam selects content servers based on your location and recommends choosing your own region or the closest available one. That is the best starting point—not a guarantee that the nearest region will always be fastest. A nearby alternative may perform better on your connection at a particular time.
Steam’s official guidance does not provide a dated, quantified ranking of regions by download speed. Compare the results you actually get rather than relying on a list of supposedly fastest regions.
How to change the Download Region
- In the Steam client, open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Choose Download Region and select your location or the closest available region.
- Retry the download. If it is still slow, repeat the process with one nearby region at a time and compare the results.
Menu wording can vary slightly by operating system or client version. Steam describes switching regions as a way to try another set of content servers when a problem occurs, so treat the change as a troubleshooting test.

If Steam downloads are still slow
- Check the speed limit. In Steam > Settings > Downloads, confirm the download speed limit is not set lower than you intend.
- Compare the units correctly. Steam displays download rates in bytes per second, while internet plans are commonly advertised in bits per second. One byte contains eight bits, so the figures are not directly comparable without conversion.
- Test a nearby region. Try alternatives one at a time, judging each by the observed result on your connection at that time.
- Respond to a content-server error. If Steam says no content servers are currently configured to deliver content for the game, its support guidance is to try the next closest region.
Download Region is not Store country
Download Region selects which content servers Steam uses for downloads. Store country is a separate purchasing and account setting. Steam says your Store country should reflect where you reside, and changing it requires a payment method from that country. Do not change Store country to try to improve download speeds.
