Assassin’s Creed Unity is the clearest current answer if you want online play with friends. Ubisoft describes it as an online co-op game with missions built for cooperative play, and players can invite up to three friends, for a group of four including the host. Unity does not offer the competitive player-versus-player multiplayer that some earlier entries had, so the answer depends on which kind of multiplayer you mean.
Which Assassin’s Creed has online co-op today?
Unity is the only entry in the series that Ubisoft currently presents as a working online co-op game. Ubisoft’s product page promotes the mode with the line “A Unique Co-Op Experience You Must Play to Believe,” which is marketing copy rather than an independent assessment, so attribute it to Ubisoft if you quote it.
What you need to play Unity co-op
Ubisoft Help lists the following requirements. Check each one before you try to set up a session:
- An internet connection. Co-op is online only.
- Friends on your platform. Your partners must be on your friends list on the same platform’s network.
- The applicable online subscription on console. Ubisoft’s support page lists Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus, or Xbox Game Pass. These subscription names and their terms change over time, so confirm the current requirement on your platform before buying.
- Progress past Sequence 3. Co-op unlocks after Sequence 3 of the main story, so a new save will not have it available from the start.
What “multiplayer” means in this franchise
The series has used the word for two different things, and the two have very different availability today. Cooperative missions let you complete objectives alongside friends in the same world. Competitive multiplayer pits players against each other. Unity’s advertised online mode is the cooperative kind. If you were looking for the versus-style modes from older entries, that is a different question with a different answer, covered in the table below.

Unexpected allies will also cross your path, as three officers join you on your journey as part of the main narrative. More surprises await, such as new sea shanties, pets, a photo mode, and more.
Current status of the series’ multiplayer-era titles
Being included in a release does not mean its multiplayer still works. Ubisoft’s product and support pages for the titles below show the status as checked on 8 October 2026. Because online-service status can change, confirm it on the store page for the edition you plan to buy.
| Title | Multiplayer type | Status according to Ubisoft (checked 8 October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Assassin’s Creed Unity | Online cooperative missions with up to three friends | Advertised as available, subject to the setup requirements above |
| Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood | Competitive multiplayer, added after release | Ubisoft’s current listing says the online feature is no longer available |
| Assassin’s Creed Revelations | Competitive multiplayer | Ubisoft’s current page carries the same availability notice: online features no longer available |
| Assassin’s Creed III Remastered | Multiplayer and online features in the original game | Ubisoft says multiplayer and online features are no longer available; the remaster includes solo content |
| Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Resynced | Not applicable; no multiplayer mode | Ubisoft describes it as a solo experience with no multiplayer |
Why a remaster is not a multiplayer workaround
Remasters and remakes are where readers most often get caught out. The original Assassin’s Creed III had multiplayer, but the remastered edition does not restore it, according to Ubisoft’s page. Black Flag Resynced never included multiplayer in the first place. If a specific mode matters to you, buy the edition that Ubisoft’s current page describes as having it, and check that page before purchase.
