Neither franchise is universally better: choose DOOM for fast, focused solo combat, and Halo for science-fiction campaigns, co-op, and accessible multiplayer. The right pick depends on which game and play style you mean—these series offer different strengths rather than a single fair, objective winner.

Choose by the way you want to play

If you want… Lean toward… Why
Fast, aggressive single-player combat DOOM Xbox describes DOOM (2016) as a single-player game built around fast, fluid first-person combat. DOOM: The Dark Ages is also single-player, with a more grounded combat style and the Shield Saw. Xbox: DOOM; Xbox: DOOM: The Dark Ages
A science-fiction campaign to play with friends Halo Halo: Campaign Evolved rebuilds the original campaign, adds three missions, and supports online co-op for up to four players. Xbox Wire: Halo: Campaign Evolved
Multiplayer without buying the campaign Halo Infinite Its multiplayer is free to play and supports crossplay and cross-progression; the campaign is separate and requires purchase or eligible Game Pass access. Halo Support: What is Halo Infinite?
The newest entries in these comparisons Depends on your priority DOOM: The Dark Ages is a single-player prequel; Halo: Campaign Evolved is a rebuilt campaign with co-op. One favors solo action, the other campaign play with friends. Xbox: DOOM: The Dark Ages; Xbox Wire: Halo: Campaign Evolved editions and launch details

What DOOM is better suited for

Pick DOOM if your main goal is a concentrated single-player shooter and you want combat to drive the experience. Xbox characterizes DOOM (2016) around fast, fluid combat. DOOM: The Dark Ages takes a more grounded approach and introduces the Shield Saw, while remaining a single-player prequel. Those official descriptions support a useful distinction, but do not establish that one entry is objectively better than the other.

DOOM also has a collector-oriented physical option: Bethesda’s DOOM Anthology page describes a collection of multiple DOOM games with a SteelBook case and BFG replica. That is a product for fans interested in a physical collection, not evidence that the franchise offers better gameplay or value. Bethesda Gear Store: DOOM Anthology

What Halo is better suited for

Halo is the stronger fit if you want a science-fiction campaign alongside multiplayer or cooperative play. Halo: Campaign Evolved rebuilds the original Halo campaign, adds three missions, and supports online co-op for up to four players. Xbox Wire quotes executive producer Damon Conn describing the project’s starting point: “We wanted to start where it all began, with the original campaign that defined Halo.” Xbox Wire: Halo: Campaign Evolved

If you mainly want multiplayer, Halo Infinite offers a documented free-to-play option. Its campaign is a separate purchase or requires eligible Game Pass access, so “free Halo” applies to the multiplayer, not the full game. Halo Support also identifies crossplay and cross-progression among its features. Halo Support: What is Halo Infinite?

Which newer game should you start with?

DOOM: The Dark Ages released May 15, 2025, according to its Xbox Store listing. Halo: Campaign Evolved launched July 28, 2026, according to Xbox Wire. They are not direct substitutes: The Dark Ages is a single-player DOOM prequel, while Campaign Evolved centers on a rebuilt Halo campaign with online co-op. Choose based on whether you want solo combat or a campaign you can play together. Check current platform support, editions, and availability on the official listings before buying. Verdict: Halo or DOOM?

For a fast, solo shooter, start with DOOM. For campaign co-op, science-fiction storytelling, or free multiplayer, choose Halo—especially Halo Infinite if multiplayer is the deciding factor. There is no supported franchise-wide score or consensus ranking that settles the question; the better series is the one that matches how you want to play.
