Which Edition of Red Dead Redemption 2 Should You Buy? Standard vs Ultimate

For most buyers, Standard is the right edition. It includes both Red Dead Redemption 2: Story Mode and Red Dead Online, so the full story and ordinary online access come in the base game. Ultimate is worth considering only if you specifically want its bonus content, meaning the additional Story Mode mission and gang hideout, a horse, outfits, weapons, gameplay boosts, and Red Dead Online rank bonuses, and the price gap is acceptable on your platform.

What each edition includes

Rockstar’s official product page describes the difference this way: “The Red Dead Redemption 2: Ultimate Edition delivers all of the Story Mode content from the Special Edition plus additional bonuses for Red Dead Online.” The gap between the two editions is therefore bonus content, not access to either mode.

What Ultimate adds

Rockstar’s Special Edition game information page, last updated August 18, 2026, lists the Story Mode bonuses that Ultimate bundles. Rockstar’s product page adds that the Ultimate online bonuses sit on top of them.

Rockstar states that Ultimate buyers get free access to Additional Weapons in both Story Mode and Red Dead Online. These are bonuses, not prerequisites: none of them is needed to start or play Red Dead Online.

Which edition to buy

If you want the story and ordinary online play

Buy Standard. It contains both Story Mode and Red Dead Online, and the extra price for Ultimate buys only bonus items.

If you play Red Dead Online regularly

Compare the price difference against the online items you would actually use: the bonus outfits, rank bonuses, the Black Chestnut Thoroughbred, Survivor Camp Theme access, and the additional weapons. If you will use few of them, Standard remains the better value.

If your interest is mainly Story Mode

Standard is the straightforward choice unless the Bank Robbery Mission, Gang Hideout, Dappled Black Thoroughbred, Nuevo Paraíso Gunslinger Outfit, or the gameplay bonuses are worth the added cost to you personally.

If you are buying a physical copy

Check that the package or listing names the platform and edition you want, and confirm whether you are getting a physical disc or a digital code. Rockstar’s PlayStation listing confirms a PS4 Standard Edition product, but physical retail availability varies by seller and region and is not covered here.

Platform requirements to check before buying

PC

Rockstar’s PC store lists Windows 10 64-bit, 8 GB RAM minimum, 12 GB RAM recommended, and 150 GB of disk space. Installation, activation, online play, and periodic entitlement checks require an internet connection, the Rockstar Games Launcher, and a Social Club login. Requirements can change, so confirm them on the official store page before purchase.

Xbox console

Xbox states that online multiplayer on console requires Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate, which are sold separately. This matters if you plan to play Red Dead Online on Xbox, whichever edition you choose. It does not affect a decision based only on Story Mode.
