In Overwatch esports, “Main Support” and “Flex Support” are competitive labels for the two Support players on a team. They describe each player’s usual hero pool and role within the roster. They are not official in-game hero categories. Blizzard’s in-game system uses the Support role and named Support sub-roles, and the main/flex split is a convention that sits on top of that system.
What the labels mean
Blizzard describes Support as an in-game role whose heroes empower allies through healing, shielding, damage boosts, and disabling foes (Blizzard Entertainment, “Overwatch Heroes”). That is the game’s classification of what a Support hero does. The esports labels answer a different question: which hero pool a particular player tends to use, and how that player fits a team’s composition.
“Main” does not mean “the support who heals more.” Neither label measures healing output or ranks the two players. A Main Support can play a damage-boosting or disabling hero in a given match, and a Flex Support can spend a series on healers if the composition calls for it.
Where the terms come from
The split grew out of competitive player specialization and historic hero pools. A community explanation in an Overwatch Forums thread titled “Main support and Flex support, what do they mean?” describes Lúcio as a frequent early pick, with the other support player flexing among alternatives. That account is community history, not a Blizzard definition. It explains how the convention arose but does not fix which heroes belong to which label.

Current examples
Blizzard’s “OWCS: Know Before You Go — Stage 1” preview for the 2025 Overwatch Champions Series identifies CH0R0NG as Crazy Raccoon’s Main Support and Shu as its Flex Support. That is a dated, team-specific example from one season. It does not establish a standing roster, and players’ hero pools can change between seasons and patches.
Community discussion also associates particular heroes with each label. The table below treats those associations as a starting point, not a rule.

Hero overlap between the two columns is common, and the lists are illustrative. Blizzard’s in-game sub-role system does not publish a canonical main-versus-flex hero list. A hero’s label therefore depends on the team, the period, and the player.
How the labels differ from in-game sub-roles
Blizzard’s “Weekly Recall: Sub-Role Call!” explains that Support heroes carry named sub-roles. The ones named in that explanation are Medic, Survivor, and Tactician. The table below separates the three layers that appear in coverage of Support players.

Because the esports labels come from a separate layer, a player’s Main or Flex status can cut across sub-roles. Check the official sub-role name for a hero against the esports label for a player, rather than assuming one implies the other.

Main and Flex labels only matter because competitive teams field two Support players. The Overwatch Champions Series 2025 NA & EMEA Official Rules v1.2 require two Support players in the covered team setup. That rule governs roster structure. It does not assign heroes to either label.

How to read the labels when watching or playing
- Note the season and patch a broadcast or article refers to. The 2025 example above describes that season only.
- Read each label against the composition on screen, not against a fixed hero list.
- Look at a player’s hero choices across several maps or series before deciding which label fits.
- Expect labels to shift when a team changes its roster, its strategy, or the heroes available to it.
