In Marvel Puzzle Quest, charged tiles belong to neither team: either side can match one. A match deals three times the damage and generates three AP in that tile’s color, according to the Marvel Puzzle Quest Help Center. So “who charged it?” depends on the ability that created or changed the tile; “who gets to use it?” depends on who makes the match.
What does a charged tile do?
A charged tile is a tile effect, not a special tile owned by the player who created it. The Help Center describes it as dealing three times the damage and generating three AP when matched, and explicitly says it is “Not owned by either team.” The AP is in the charged tile’s color.
The Help Center page reports an update indicator of 1,815 days, so treat its wording as the documented rule rather than a guarantee that every current ability or interaction is unchanged. For a specific character’s current values and conditions, check that character’s power text in game.
Who can match charged tiles?
Either team can match them. Creating or moving a charged tile does not reserve it for your side. That makes placement a tactical decision: a tile can set up your boosted match, but it can also give the opponent a stronger match and three AP if they reach it first.

Which MPQ characters create or use charged tiles?
These official character articles illustrate different ways abilities can create charged tiles and reward them. They are examples, not a complete roster or a current ranking.
Lockjaw: random conversion with a color-based payoff
Marvel’s Lockjaw character overview describes his green ability converting random basic tiles to charged tiles. His passive deals damage at the start of a turn if a charged tile is in the enemy’s strongest color. That links tile creation to a color-specific payoff, but it does not make him a universally best choice.

Mordo: build around black charged tiles
Marvel’s Mordo design interview describes Staff of the Living Tribunal converting black basic tiles to charged tiles and dealing additional damage based on black charged tiles. His blue power converts basic tiles of the enemy’s strongest color into black charged tiles. In the interview’s description, generating black charged tiles is central to his damage loop.
Agent Coulson: choose tiles, then swap them
Marvel’s Agent Coulson interview describes Best-Laid Plans letting the player choose two red and/or green basic tiles, convert them to charged tiles, and swap them. The article also names Thor (Goddess of Thunder) as a possible synergy partner because her Smite can take advantage of charged tiles on the board.

Black Knight: charged-tile thresholds
Marvel’s Black Knight overview offers another design example: an ability creates charged tiles, while other effects become available when charged-tile thresholds are reached.
How to decide whether to create charged tiles
- Check the immediate board first. Look for an opponent match that would include a charged tile. If one is available, creating or moving tiles may hand over the boosted damage and AP.
- Weigh the color. A match generates AP in the tile’s color. Favor a color that advances a useful power, but account for what the opponent could gain from it.
- Compare control with randomness. Coulson’s described selection-and-swap effect gives more choice over eligible tiles than Lockjaw’s random-conversion example. How valuable that control is depends on the board and the ability’s current text.
- Match the tile to the character’s payoff. Mordo’s described kit rewards black charged tiles; Lockjaw’s passive keys off a charged tile in the enemy’s strongest color; Black Knight’s overview shows that some effects depend on reaching charged-tile thresholds.
These are decisions inferred from the documented rules and ability descriptions, not measured performance claims. No win-rate comparison or match-testing result establishes a best charged-tile team.
